This plant has been passed down for many generations in my family. It was originally from Mexico and my sister in central Florida says that hers had a white flower (ours has never flowered here in North Texas. We have kept it in a pot and would like to put it in the ground but I want to research as much as I can about it-starting with a name.

    Any ideas would be helpful.

A friend of mine has a corn plant that must be 9 feet tall! It sent off white blooms that smelled Heavenly and dripped sticky sap. She kept hers in a BIG pot in her family room.

With a neck like that I believe you've got a crinum of some sort. Here are a few pics of the ones in my yard. As you can see there are quite a few different ones. In fact I have several others that are not pictured.

I think Toni and Cheryl are correct. That was also my first thought. Looks like one to me.

    Crinum ? Draceana?

does the crinum have a long stem/trunk like this one?

the draceana that I have seen have a sturdy, wood-like stem/trunk. this one is somewhat soft and flexible, covered with the dried out leaves as they are formed concentrically.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far :)

    Are these Male/Female plants?

I have had this plant for 7 years and I have never seen it bloom. It has gotten considerably bigger. It has always had two stems coming up so I don't even know how this plant reproduces.

Good morning, I am thinking that it could be a yucca plant of some sort. Some of them have soft leaves.

Crinums, to my knowledge, do not have "woody" trunks. And the leaves just don't seem right to be Crinum. These are nice and straight. Crinum's leaves tend to be "wavy".

A crinum would die down some part of the year like most bulbs and it would also have had some sort of flower in 8yr or have mutiplied.

I think the leaves look too long and heavy for dracena.

IF soft and covered with dried up leaves points me in the Crinum direction.
If you can peel off the dried up leaves from around the bottom of the stem and they are paper thin and soft... it's crinum. And you can peel some, to make it look better... I always do on mine.

Also, Dracaena doesn't have small teeth along the leaf margins? That can be checked...

    I vote for CRINUM.
Gradually move it into the sun and give it more water.

In my case, kept in a pot and overwintered in the house (much less watering) it usually flowers late in the summer, even fall... september or so.
