I used to have hens & chicks. Easy to grow and they spread like weeds! Neat looking plants. Mine got all mushy after flowering, though...
Yea, it's funny how beautiful and intricate these flowers are. Toad, looks like it's a "I-bloom-and-I-go" plant. That's why they usually have many babies around by the time they need to flower.
I'm in zone 5. I don't think I lost any last winter. They do multiply. I took this photo yesterday. You can see the babies around the mommas. I had these growing in the garden last spring. I moved them to the pot so I didn't have so many weeds to pull. Don
I don't think I've ever seen one bloom before and liked them when I thought they were cute little alien cabbages! Now I need some!
my next door neighbor (we share our back yards) has them in pots on her back steps, and leaves them there all winter long. we are in zone 5, and it usually gets pretty cold here.
Mine are flowering too...I cut the flowers off after a while...I put mine in the ground and they seem to be doing fine for the last 5-6 years. I am in zone 4. I am having one problem but it isn't because of the hens & chicks, the chipmunks seem to be excavating every where and under everything....
Those are really pretty blooms, don't know how I missed them when first posted except I have been in a 'couldn't care less about gardening' mood this summer again. They sure have neat looking flowers. My hens and chicks bloomed also. But I hate it that those plants that bloom always die afterwards. I'm in zone 5 also and my do great being planted in the ground.
I've had Hens and Chicks (or Cats and Kittens) since I was a teenager (many, many, many years!) and I have never seen one bloom! Thank you!
