Chocolate, I have three banana trees that are all bearing bananas.....just planted them for fun not expecting them to bear.....to my surprise they did!!!! Not sure what to do at this point are when to pick them???...and are they edible? At this point they have this purple thing hanging on what seems to be a long vine (about two feet long). Would post some pics but this forum does not give me the option to do so. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Nice bunch of bananas there GGmen, the flower can be cut off now to improve the quality of the fruit.About 12" down from the last row of fruit cut the purple flower off. They like water and maybe some potash to improve the flavour and size. When the green fruit lose the squarish look and look roundy, may take a while like some weeks depending on the temperature, the bunch should be picked and hung somewhere handy, preferably under a porch or somewhere like that where it is warm. They ripen very quickly when they start and some can go rotten and be lost if left on the vine, watch and when they are a nice goldy colour try one or two, infact you can smell when they are ripe........then enjoy, and quickly. Not like the supermarket ones which are sprayed to induce ripening.A whole different taste and that also depends on the type of banana of course. Well done and dont forget to keep us posted of the taste test etc....well done! In the photo you can see the bag in place, the tinfoil side goes towards the sun to prevent the fruit becoming too hot.On 'real' banana farms they have different colour bags for different types of fruit.
Yippe!!! I'm going bananas with all the bananas going on here!!! I hope that the banna flowers are not discarded after being cut off ... Don't throw them away, they can be eaten in may ways and they are delicious too!!! I ♥ bananas!!!
Good evening KK Ng some of the asian supermarkets have banana flowers for sale, also leaves can be bought for cooking fish and other food on the BBQ.
Thanks Chocolate and KK ng for the advise and tips. How would I be able to tell what variety of banana tree I have??? Since I believe some varieties can only be used for cooking and should not be eaten raw or once ripened? Will not discard flower as I have searched the internet and found ways to prepare them....can't wait!!! Thanks
