Fri evening I went to my 50th High School Reunion. Out of a class of 91, 42 people came back 50 years later. From across the country and even from overseas, they flocked back to where it all started. Fri evening we had a barbque dinner with pulled pork and Bar b Qued chiken and roasted potatoes salad and desert. They provided iced tea and any other adult beverages, you had to provide for yourself. One of the best ideas for the reunion that I saw was the name tags. They took the metal badges like you see for election candidates and cutout our Senior yearbook pictures and put on them. That way you could see the name and the picture from 50 years ago and you had instant recognition. But the time went so fast that you really didn't get a chance to talk to everyone that you wanted to. Today (Sat) we all got together at a local restraunt that isn't open in the mornings for a really nice brunch. Several people that were at the party Fri night couldn't be there today and several that missed the Fri. shindigs were so it all evened out. After 50 years the high school cliques had finally disappeared. One girl or should I say woman came up to me as I was leaving and gave me a hug and told me how glad she was that I came for the activities. In four years of high school, I bet she didn't say 2 words to me. Some people hadn't changed at all and some people you had trouble beleiving it was them. Our class has had a reunion every five years since graduation. This morning we voted to have another one in 2 years and would combine it with a 70th birthday party . But we did concede to have it in Sept of that year. The people that came back from Arizona almost died in all the humidity of central Ohio. Would I go to another one? You bet! I had the time of my life seeing old friends that I knew there was the possibility that I may not ever see again. If you have a class reunion coming up and are debating on wether to go or not, GO! Don't miss the chance to revisit the people of your youth. One girl that didn't come back for it, had written a letter and said that the reason she didn't come was that she didn't want everyone to see how old she looked. DUH we all have mirrors and an idea of how age plays on people. Out of a class of 91, we have only lost 9 people. That is very good odds. The same school this year graduated 420 seniors. Me thinks we have grown a little.
How wonderful that you could go and rekindle some friendships, Capt Kirk! Sounds like a good time. A more casual setting and good food with friends. Sounds like a grand milestone!
I would love that Capt! Going to have to wait another 35 years or so. Glad you had a great time with your old classmates.
Meeting up with old friends is such fun!! So pleased that you had such a good time at the reunion CK. Here's to the next one!! :-D
I really dunno what introvert me is going to do when I receive my invitation I left high school only 3 years back and so far, I bumped into only 3-4 of my friends; the rest having gone abroad for studies but I guess things will change (for the best) in decades' time! It was heartwarming to go through your post, Capt. The badge/ name tag thing too sounds like a really good idea; kudos to whoever thought of it! In modern times when social networks and virtual friends are rife, it's always wonderful to catch up with REAL friends and relive those moments, no matter how buried you wrongly thought they were!
They took a picture of the whole group together on Friday evening. Then they passed them out on Sat at the brunch. I told one guy, that 50 years ago it would have taken 3 months to have gotten them, not 12 hrs. How technology has changed our world in a very short time.
Capt, I just talked with a friend last night and she said the exact same thoughts you shared. It was like de ja vue(?). Her 50th is in a couple weeks and classmates from all over the country will be here and they are going up to Cleveland and going on a dinner cruise and then staying at a hotel over night then having breakfast together at a restaurant. I don't think she has missed one yet. I had to chuckle as I read it..because like Oubee, I haven't seen too many classmates from school and haven't attended one reunion yet and my 25th one is this coming weekend...not going then either. They never seem to come at a "not scheduled" week end. This year it is my daughters 16th birthday on that day. Maybe on my 50th I'll be able to make it .
I'm so glad you had a lovely time, Capt. Reunions can be so much fun. I hope the next one will be just as big a success.
