Well, I haven't been able to come up with a tomato for my entry so as I was picking apples this week I found this giant variety growing a great number of awesome apples and i was wondering if anyone minded if I entered this instead? ( photo / image / picture from carolyn keiper's Garden ) Just kidding. My fault for not fostering a specific plant for this contest, but I was too busy trying to keep the ones I had alive, let alone bearing a giant tomato. these are jonagold apples and there were many of them this size on the tree this year.
I never got a single apple off my trees this year as the spring and early summer weather was so artocious. The bees didn't polinate the flowers so no fruit formed. I would have loved to pick apples the size and quality of yours.
Eileen, There were many people who didn't get a crop this year. It was hit and miss around here. Kevin's Aunt and Uncle live about 5 miles west of us and have no apples in their orchard. Some of the big growers are really hurting and some were only somewhat affected by the weather. We just happened to be blessed. The size of the apples were due to the few blossoms that survived the spring weather. We hardly thinned the apples and some years they are small because we can't get them all thinned properly. Deanna, I like these, too. I think my favorite of all the ones we grow is called Freedom. A great spray less tree. they were bred to bear a nicer crop with less spraying for fungal diseases. I have a honeycrisp that should bear a decent amount next year if the dryness this year didn't prohibit them from making flower buds.
KK, I, who grew approximately 150 tomato plants, had no sizable tomato for the contest Most of my tomatoes were hybrids and I grow the ones I do for their uniform size and great flavor. I grew only a few heirloom varieties and they so far haven't grown anything of great size and they were a variety that won a worlds fair for size (7 pounds). I only found that out after I planted them. I just wanted to try them for their flavor and texture since I have had a few requests for this variety. I am sorely disappointed in both, so far.
Oh boy that is enormous,..enough for the makings of a pie i should think,..i eat a lot of apples per week,..in fact it works out about 14 in all,.."Pink Lady",..a nice sweet fruit.
Nice apple, C! I hear ya about struggling to keep your plants healthy this year. My production is way down from last year with many plants sorts. Boy, that apple looks good enough to take a big bite out of. Mmmmmmm.
Philip and Sjoerd...It is going into the applesauce today. My MIL has been down with pneumonia for the last week so I am the official applesauce maker for the neighbor(them) this week. I'll use 4 bu. for them and then do a few more for us. Good thing we have our own trees. I don't think it would be economical to buy enough this year to make the sauce.
