It was cool this morning so I went and planted my four vegetable beds. I planted lettuce and beets in the triangle. There are some peppers from summer that have leaves and flowers so I left them in there. In the square bed I planted carrots, Denver half longs and Nantes.Spinach here, too. In the long rectangle bed I planted kale, swiss chard and a short row of fennel. In the smaller rectangle bed I planted sugar snap peas, a row of lettuce, a row of spinach mustard and nine cucumber seeds which will have to be moved if they grow. I need to go water them pretty soon. fall vegetable gardens ( photo / image / picture from dooley's Garden ) dooley
Just about every thing is a cool weather vegetable so should do okay. Last year it was Dec. 1st when I got it planted and it grew all winter. I replanted things during the winter, too. I need to get a few more seeds if I see any in the stores. I still have those two round beds, well, there are three or four round beds. dooley
Dooley, I think I want to live there during the winter and up here for the summer. It sounds like the best of both seasons.... :-D Maybe when we are retirement age we will pack up and move for the winter months and be able to grow vegetables all year round. no snow, or not much anyway, or frigid, blowing, cold, miserable, finger numbing, bone chilling cold weather.
Toni, I think after a while both extremes are not appealing. For a little while the change is a relief, but not day after day after day for months on end. You are more than welcome to visit up here during the winter. Fly into Akron Canton airport, not the Cleveland one. just let me know, but bottle up some of your heat and bring it along for me for a few days.
What seeds do you need Dooley ? I can see if I have them. What do you do with fennel fronds? I salvages a couple but have no idea how to use them. Not sure they will make a bulb.
I'm sorry I didn't answer you sooner, Mart. I haven't used the fennel fronds. I only grow them for the seeds. I have used the bulbs in salad. Mostly dr likes the seeds when he makes sausage. I'm going to see if I can find lettuce seeds or maybe some cool weather plants already started, like brussel sprouts. dooley
I freeze my fronds in zip lock bags. When frozen, I crumble them in the same bag and leave then there. I use a little whenever I need to. I do this with celery leaves also. Here is what you can do with fronds, fennel, and seeds. Gently fry fennel seeds, diced onion and garlic in olive oil, add beacon, sliced fennel bulb and fronds cooking a little between each thing. You can even add par boiled, cubed, potatoes and/or cabbage in the end. A good Autumn treat around our house.
Good to know you can eat the fronds. Don`t think mine will make bulbs this late. Fennel was my experimental vegetable this year. Dooley I can get some lettuce types year round here at my feed store. As well as other seeds for fall. She doesn`t have a huge variety but she isd consistant with what she does carry. So if you need seeds and cant get them, let me know and I can check there.
