When the temperatures in september and octomber are high a lots of plants "think that it is spring". It is not problem for the plants. It looks great and in the same time strange to have such flowers in november.
I still have lupins flowering in the garden but neither my Rhododendron or my azaleas are doing very much at the moment. We're having severe frost nearly every night and hail so maybe it's best they stay dormant here in Scotland.
Hello Gardengirl. Such a late-flowering Rhodi I have never heard of. Is it a dwarf variety? I have heard of "late-flowering" sorts, but then, may-june is meant by "late -flowering". I have never heard of one over here flowering in november. Well, the colour is lovely at any rate. It seems like nature has really been throwing some strange things at us the past couple of years. BTW--IUrt is very good to see you back on here. I have missed you.
My word Eileen, Lupins at this late in the year Having said that my penstemons are still flowering nicely. Amazing how resistant they are to the cold temperatures. Sjoerd...many thanks for your kind remarks. Yes, I think it is a dwarf variety, do you think this makes a difference? It is somewhat sheltered by tall trees so maybe it is not getting the frost so much. I also planted some iris bulbs a few weeks ago and they are about 3" above the ground already.
Hi, GG-- It may do, but I do not know for sure. I have a dwarf one and it sometimes blooms at odd times, but never in november. I suspect that the reason that it is blooming now may be down to the combination of aberrant meteorological conditions and the genes of the plant itself. I have some Phlox plants that have just now begun formed buds that look as though they could burst into bloom any day now. The other Phlox plants surrounding this "late bloomer" are well dead and crispy-brown. I do not understand it. I also have some Astrantia's that are blooming as if it were the beginning of summer.
One local gentleman had a rhododendron that did not flower until in July. Does this rhododendron flower in July?
