Hi, My husband found this framed mounted butterfly display at a yard sale. I'm pretty sure this is a Swallowtail, but of all I've seen none have curved upper wings.I've looked through many, many photos on the web and can't find it. Thanks in advance for your help! It looks like a Tiger swallowtail (Papilio glaucus) at first glance...but I am no authority on North American butterflies.
Eastern Tiger Swallowtails are pale yellow with vertical black stripes and a blue band at the bottom of the wings. Western Tiger Swallowtails have white with vertical black stripes. I don't think there any of this wing shape in the U.S. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meandrusa It is an Asian species.
It's about 3 3/4 inches wide and about the same height. I need to post photos of the other butterflies. (I have 2 framed displays and I've only identified one of the 6 butterflies, but thanks to Toni, I now have 2 identified!)
You're welcome QotB (if I can use your initials) I have a really good book on butterflies around the world that is divided by Family so matter where in the world it is it's usually pretty easy to find and as luck would have it the book opened right up to the page with your butterfly photo
Mounted Butterfly display Thank you Toni! My husband needed the camera to take photos for work today, so I'll take pics (and hopefully post them) when I get the camera back this evening. I really appreciate your offer to research these butterflies. I have books on North American Wildlife and Birds, but nothing that covers butterflies and moths. :-D (I just found that my hubby forgot to take the camera, so I'll try to upload the photos here.)
