Maybe someone can help, i just purchased a texas starr tree, it came in the mail cut back, look like a stick with roots. i planted it in a large pot with cactus/palm soil. it started to shoot out the top fast, grew about 6 inchs in 15 days, then started to unroll but also started to turn brown. It has stopped growing. Its indoors for now cause its 13 out, waiting till spring to plant. i water everyday, is that to much or maybe im not giving it enough. Its next to a window and get sun about 5hrs a day but is not direct all day. any ideas? thanks
Hi and welcome to GardenStew. Water when the plant needs it not by a schedule. If you can, you might want to repot into dry soil and start over otherwise the roots will rot and not recover. It needs 12+ hours of bright light and constant warmth, especially when growing indoors in a norther climate. Being next to a window means it's getting too cold put it in a room or area where the temp is consistently warm. A grow light will help with the bright light it needs. You might also want to remove it from the pot, cut off any leaves, let it dry out some and store it in a warm area for the winter. You can replant it in late spring after the last freeze.
does it go into hibernation? so remove it completely out of the pot, let dry and store it in a warm spot? does it need to be watered? wont it die?
Many plants that grow in hot climates can be stored dry and bare for winter up north....Canna, Lilies, Iris, Glads, etc. Can't guarantee it won't die since it is already under some stress but letting it rest until you plant it outside would give it a chance to recuperate.
From the info I found, it was given the name Texas Star by a nursery. There are some who think it is actually Musa 'Dwarf Orinoco' or Musa 'Ice Cream' but no one knows for sure.
