Purpleinopp...I love that philo, have tried to grow it many times but I dont have any luck, any secrets about it's care?
Chocolate, yes yes yes! Always LOVE your pics. Thanks for sharing them! I just got that Philo a couple weeks ago because I asked about the giant mama plant at a garden center I visited. She got me a new cutting from the back room that they had recently potted. It's basically identical in structure and texture to one I've had for a while with solid burgundy leaves so I will give the same treatment, no direct sun, porous soil mix, shower often while outside. The garden center's mama Philo plant ( photo / image / picture from purpleinopp's Garden ) Raptor, Calathea kind of has a fussy reputation regarding humidity and drainage. Very inexpensive if you find one at a BBS though, should be under $10.
Hi Barb, this is a calathea called calathea rosy. It prefers not too much light. infact in bright light the colours fade a bit. Likes to be evenly moist...not wet. As you can see that one is in a pot...so I can show it off. I have another with bright pink on the leaves, and different pattern, in the shadehouse, I noticed today it was just peeping out, shadehouse is covered with 50/50 shadecloth. They almost look like you could wear them dont they? Always the centre of attraction on the kitchen table.
Wow... those are ALL gorgeous! Pink leaves hmmmmm..... I think I have some.... Red Sister Cordyline ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden ) Red Sister Cordyline Caladium ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden ) Caladium Kangaroo Paw blooms ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden ) And I may be stretching it a bit to include the Kangaroo Paw?
The Kangaroo Paw (Anigozanthos flavidus) is Native to Australia. I found it on the mark down rack last year. I've kept it outside all winter... but made sure it was protected from frosts. It is showing new growth. Here's a photo of the whole plant.... not sure if the pink paws are considered part of the flower are part of the leaves? I must say all these plants look delicious. I do love them all. Chocolate, My dear.........glad to see that you are still here. I have been watching that the fires didn't get the best of you. Don't know what I would have done if they did....... I am Googling that Calathea Rosey and will order it whenever they ship it out to me. I have always had a strong fancy toward Calathea.
Hi, thanks for your concern, we are a long way from the fires, a bit closer to the recent tropical cyclone, only the smoke and wind have bothered us and knocked the garden about.I lost a few plants like frangipani and raspberries nothing really that cant be fixed...so we will. If you like calatheas here are some others, most of them grow in the ground here ( photo / image / picture from chocolate's Garden ) ( photo / image / picture from chocolate's Garden ) ( photo / image / picture from chocolate's Garden ) ( photo / image / picture from chocolate's Garden ) ( photo / image / picture from chocolate's Garden ) OOOPPS....I think I could be in serious trouble, these are not pink coloured, please forgive me.
Nah, they're too busy oooh'ing and ahhh'ing over the pretty plants! Ooooh. Aaahhh. Is there any such thing as too much plant porn? Not for me anyway. Pink is my 2nd fav leaf color, almost tied with purple. In addition to being my 2nd favorite color for leaves, I wanted to see how many plants, even just from the house plant genre, people could gather that have pink leaves to see if there's enough plants with pink leaves to warrant adding that choice to the plant database. Some plants have leaves that are only pink. "Variegated" doesn't cover a completely pink leaf with no other colors, and the variegation is often some other color and pink, but that can't be indicated with no choice of pink. Burgundy, the next-best choice is just wrong for some of these shades of pink, the really light ones. I don't know, but seems more common than blue to me. What do you guys and gals think? If you think I'm just picking fly poo out of pepper, I don't mind if you say so.
