Hello, We have this long ugly window in our bedroom (see the picture), and we are looking for any solution to make it look more "homy" We do NOT want to use any curtains (the window already has blinds). Is there anything we can we do to make it look prettier, avoiding curtains? I would be very thankful for any suggestions moderator's note: added photo from member's Garden
I'd put a pretty flower box under the window and plant some ivy to hang down the wall and something to grow up behind the ivy. Silk plants and flowers would work also.
Even though you don't want curtains on that window I think a sheer swag valance would soften the top and side frame. It will not cover the window so light will come in.
Put a cornice above the window to give it the illusion of being taller. A simple one can be made of 1/4" plywood. It is basically a [______] shape, with the open side being against the wall. There are little brackets or supports on the wall, and the cornice is attached to them. Wallpaper, paint, stenciling, whatever you like can decorate the cornice.
Marlin I like your idea of the cornice. It would make a big difference in how the window looked. They also could have someone come in and paint an extension of a the window so it looks longer. They could paint a view of looking out into a flower garden threw the fake window. That way even it they have the blinds down it would still look like you are looking out a window.
Thanks Thanks a lot! I love the ideas of plants and cornice.I have sketched my overall impression on what I may do, based on your suggestions! (Please do not laugh about my drawing, I have never done anything like this before!) We'll work on it - I hope to post a picture after we're done... Sounds like lots of work! What about a curtain just from the wall[at both ends] just to the windows edge to give the impression of a wall to wall window.
I don't have pictures of all of my windows, but I have colored glass in them.I did find two pictures. The light shines through and I love it. Pretty blue ( photo / image / picture from Lil Bug's Garden ) I like lots of color. ( photo / image / picture from Lil Bug's Garden )
I love colored glass idea, thank you! Yet we avoid curtains in any possible way... They collect lots of dust, and we are all allergic to dust at home... We are now trying to make some final decisions on the details!
Or.. here's an idea? Take the mini blinds down, and add one of these beautiful mylar window films to each window they look like stained glass, and still let light in, add a cornice across the top if you want to make 2 windows look like one. These are only a few of the designs found at The Home Depot. ( photo / image / picture from SusieQ07's Garden )
I don't have the window problem, because I love my frosted glass, but we are turning a small bedroom into a bathroom. It opens at the end of a hall.So I'm using a door with a glass panel, and plan to get apiece of the film in white frost with a bit of stenciling on it. One day when finshed I will try to post. The room has a large window in it so the light will light up the hall.
