Well, after my little sojourn around the local nursery, I managed to pick up a bag full of hyacinth bulbs that they were shifting for 5pence each. How could a girl resist!?! Now, what to do with them?? Should I treat like amarylis and plant the bulbs, leaving the top exposed, water and wait until it flowers? They already have nice thick green shoots growing out of the tops!
It's what I did last week EJ and they are looking good!!!!! Hope yours are a success. 5p each is a real bargain as mine cost me 10p each.
I have hyacinths planted in pots inside the house. The problem is that the leaves have started to turn yellow...any suggestions on what I could do?!"
EJ, put them in the ground with their little shoots sticking up. If you get good freezes there, they should be happy little guys. Hyacinth, seeing where you live, I just don't know..Frank, you are closer than any of the rest of us. If you put them outside, mightn't reindeer eat them?
Oop, EJ, When I see a freeze coming, and the shoots are up, I mulch them up to a foot deep. They seem to like it.
Of course it all depends on exactly where Hyacinth lives but I'd say it'll be just fine Hyacinth can you give us some more details that may help us identify your problem? The following would be useful: - Amount of sun/shade it's getting - Watering schedule - Feeding schedule Thanks
My Hyacinths are in the ground year round and show up in February if the winter has been real warm. This last late winter, they bloomed in January. Even after winters when we did have several nights of below 32 degrees and even some ice storms, they would be up and blooming in early March. Since they are a bulb and have a relatively short growing time, wouldn't the leaves turning yellow just be a sign that they were beginning to go dormant so they can regain energy for next growing season? I have never grown them inside.
Same here Mine live outside all year long. We get some cold winters in zone 6! I won't see buds or flowers until April or May (If I can keep the dog out of the flower bed!) Deanna :-D
