I have never seen ice sickles do this before. They are on both sides of the house hanging down from the rain gutters. They look rather menacing.

Very neat and strange looking at the same time. I have no idea why they are bending in toward the house. Usually ice sickles hang straight down.

It is a gravitational dissimilarity caused by exceedingly dense rock strata. Areas of dense stratification appear across the northern half of North America, Northern Europe and Siberia. First identified by Albert Ubenhad a geologist with the Center for Geologic Studies(CGS) in Oslo Norway in 1892. Obviously there is enough gravitational flux( measured in (gauss) to exceed the normal .5gauss in your area of Wisconsin to cause the phenomena you observe.

I think it was all the wind and bull s. coming from Jerry that caused it! Probably wind blowing as they formed?

Carolyn maybe. I never have tried that water thing. We do have a lot of underground springs in our area as well. I think the only thing I would do with a stick is knock those ice sickles down so they didn't fall on anyone. :-D

Jerry you had me going there for awhile. We do live on top of the Niagara escarpment. But we have lived here for more than 5 years and have never had those ice sickles look like that before.

Capt. you could be right about the bull flying around. But it could not be the wind. If you look closely at the pic's you will see that some of the ice sickles do form straight downward like normal ones do. Good try though. I still think it might be my magnetic personality. :D :D

Jewell I think so to. ;)

According to one source the curved icicles result as the snow moves over the eve of the house. The overhanging snow with icicles sags and the icicles bend inward toward the house. Melting water follows the inward pointing ice and then freezes in a downward direction causing the curve.

Aside from their Gothic beauty, I find their presence disheartening. hahaha. It looks as though Spring is a long way off there. :-?

The icicles do that on our tin roof when the sun is shining on them. The ice slides off the roof and curves in.

We have icicles here too but none as weirdly curved as yours. Isn't nature wonderful? :-D
