There are not a lot of native birds in Hawaii. People were asked to bring birds to Hawaii many years ago so now they have species from many other countries. Common Waxbill ( photo / image / picture from Kildale's Garden )
Thought that I would add a few birds to this lonely one. We don't get the cardinal at home so it is nice to see them when one gets away. Oh! And here I was, thinking Hawaii had lots of colourful native birds. New lesson learned today then. The birds you're showing are lovely. I especially like the one with the red head and chest.
Great shots Kildale. I didn't know that Hawaii didn't have many native birds of its own either. The bird in the last photograph looks quite similar to our British Bullfinch. Could you tell us what the bird below the egret is please? It has the look of some sort of small parakeet.
I always imagined Hawaii with lots of big colorful native birds. Count me in with the "learned something new" group. Those are all so pretty.
The bird is the Red-crested Cardinal (Paroaria coronata) introduced from Brazil around 1930. The bird below that one is from Java, the Java finch. The Waxbill at the top is from Africa. The Nene is the states official bird and protected by law, it of course is native, but very rare in the wild. I think most of the exotic birds were killed off for their feathers for head dresses etc.like Papua New Guinea. ( photo / image / picture from Kildale's Garden )
Thanks for letting us know what the birds are Kildale. We humans have a lot to answer for haven't we? We do more damage to wildlife than any other species on earth.
Even the birds in Hawaii will pose for you Kildale! I love the Red-Crested Cardinal! We have them in the Aviary at our local zoo. I always feel lucky to have the Cardinals living here year round. they are my favorites.
