Every year in early March a new brood of baby chipmunks venture out of their borough. They romp and play for a few days and then they scatter to find their way in the world. I put a "Welcome to the garden" sign at the back of entrance to the borough as a marker for taking photos...the chipmunks thought it made a great lookout. Here are a few photos.

Gail, Those sure are cute. Glad they are in your garden and not mine, though. The cats wouldn't leave them there very long. Pretty soon I would have presents at the doorstep. They are much safer there.

Clever little garden helpers. They will be excellent diggers and make many suggestions as to where to plant seeds and bulbs. Naturalizing is their specialty. If you prepare a new bed and leave it for a couple of days they let you know where to plant. They are also good at hide and seek. If you hide seeds, they will seek. They are winners every time. :)

They're so cute! :D We haven't got chipmunks here, and I suppose I should be glad but I would dearly like to see them for real.

Oh how sweet, especially the third picture :D

I don't think they would be safe in our garden either as the dogs would have a field day

Thank you for the smile. :D

What great photographs Gail. They certainly made me smile. The only time I've seen chipmunks here is in cages as pets or on display in zoos. Yours look so much happier living wild and free and looking so cute. :-D

Thanks so much for your comments Carolyn, Jerry, Cheryl, Droopy, Kiasmum and Eileen. They are fun to watch but in a few weeks we will put out traps and relocate the ones we catch. They multiply too quickly and invade the garden. I have not seen them today so they may have allready moved out.

Appreciate your comments Sjoerd. I agree the trio on the sign is my favorite too. They were entertaining and cooperative for these photos but they are also destructive so will have to begin our relocation plans soon.

They are so cute!We dont have them here either so they are novelty to see, they are great posers too!
Do they eat the plants or just dig up the place?

If they dig up the place maybe I could offer a few of them a holiday here and then send them home again.

Thanks Chocolate...They do both...chew and dig. They have a main borough where they store all my birdseed :-? and then different chambers and tunnels throughout the yard. If you plug one entrance or exit they just relocate. Sorry...only one way tickets :D

I don't think you could ever get more adorable pictures of the chipmunks....I know how much damage they do here digging in my flower beds. Here they like to dig things out that I just plant...silly things.

    Great pictures...

Thanks Sherry...I was in the right place at the right time. Chipmunks are solitary creatures. They only interact like this until they leave their borough. Then they become independent and territorial...chasing each other away.

Yes they sure do look cute. I do not let them take up residence in my yard. They always want to set up house keeping right in my flower beds and dig holes where they are not welcome. So my little cuties get live trapped and moved 5 miles down the road to new dig's. :stew1:
