I want to purchase seed potatoes but can't find anywhere that will sell less than a pound or two. Ideally I'd like a pound or so total, but want a variety. Any ideas where I could go to find them?
Try a farm and ranch supply store, or a farm supply. We get ours by the pound from a F&R place, but Tractor Supply also has seed potatoes. If you have an organic grocery near you, you can buy potatoes there and let them sprout. Regular grocery potatoes are often treated with an anti-sprout chemical, but organic ones aren't. Or, if there is a farmer near you that plants potatoes, you could ask for some from him/her but the varieties might not be what you want. Good luck--home grown potatoes are marvelous!
I do buy organic potatoes and they're always quick to sprout. never thought to consider those! I'll check out the local TSC and elevator. Thanks for the tips!
I was RKO the other day and they had potatoes, but they were not organic. They were for say by the pound, though.
Just called our grain elevator and they have some! I'm so excited! Thanks!! Carolyn.. not sure if you remember but you sent some garlic to me last fall. It's beginning to grow up nicely!!
Frogdoc, I'm so happy you found a source for potatoes! We grow LaSodas (red) each year, and can hardly wait to get our mouths around those little red delicacies! We are trying Kennebec this year also to see if they do well here, and are worth the space in the garden. Let us know what variety you plant, and how they do.
We're going to set up a couple 2' x 2' barrel type growing areas. We don't have a ton of space, so I'm doing my best to go vertical when I can.
I do remember. Mine is coming up nicely, too. I was just thinking about you the other day when I noticed mine coming up. . I have some garlic I didn't use this winter and am thinking I will put it in the garden, too. No sense in it going to waste.
I usually plant Burbank russets but they sold out early so I am trying the Lasodas and Kennebec. One white row and one red.
