Confirmation Coming Up - Now With Photos

I've been a bit to and fro for the last couple of weeks and I'll be a bit to and fro for the next couple of weeks too. Our confirmation date is May 4th - international Star Wars day I believe. May the 4th be with you.

We're trying to get everything organized, the girl's national costume, place cards, flower arrangements, cakes, cookies etc. etc. The list is endless and we're way behind. I need to iron the linen shirts and head-dresses very soon in case I manage to iron creases on any of the above. The costume's brand new so no ironing needed. The embroideries are so well done, especially on the head linen. I stand in awe of those who have skill and patience to make it.

All Norwegian confirmations include a big meal and lots of cake, cookies and desserts. We've rented space at a pub/restaurant. It seemed like the smartest thing to do since I really don't like cooking and hubby's too easily stressed to cook on such a big day.

The girl has chosen a buffet lunch. That way everybody will find something they like to eat she said. Smart girl! Most of our invited guests have offered to make a cake or bring a special dessert so I think we'll be well supplied.

I don't suppose you want photos of anything, so I'll just hide the camera now. :twisted:

 

Hide the camera? You wouldn't be that mean would you? I know you wouldn't so we will be looking forward to pictures. Our grandson had confirmation last May 6th. We couldn't go but they sent us pictures.

toni, I'm going to enjoy the day. It's the days before the day I won't be enjoying. And I'm certain I'll be very happy on May 5th.

I went through the guest list yesterday. We initially thought 22 guests. Some of our family live a long way from here and we thought they couldn't make it. So far it seems like we'll be 27. Two can't attend, which is a shame. We'll miss them.

I've photographed some details from my girl's national costume. I can't stop admiring the embroidered patterns.

This is a head linen for unmarried girls:



Married women have black embroidery on theirs.

It's tied on with a decorated ribbon, making a nice bow above the forehead:

The skirt itself is plaited, plain black wool, but the apron is ankle-length and embroidered from the waist down:

Receiving one of those invitations is like receiving a work of art! And the apron and brooches and embroidery--just lovely. How wonderful to see traditions continue through the generations (although you have to iron them!).
Pictures are a must--lots and lots of pictures, especially of your lovely girl.
May the 4th be with you? Have you been sipping some aqua vit?

 

Thanks toni. She'll get to eat in it. Maybe. We wear our costumes, or bunad as they're called in Norwegian, for Constitution Day, weddings, christenings, Christmas Eve etc. etc., even if we get an audience with the King. 8) Whenever we need a formal dress a national costume is never wrong. They're quite costly, well made and are often passed on to grandchildren or great-grandchildren. Isn't that amazing?

Thanks mg. I love tradition, but not all traditions mind. This one I like. My costume is a lot simpler. It comes from the valley where my father grew up. I think I posted a photo once, maybe in my blog.

Help! *faints* I tried to get my girl to chose a Star Wars-theme for the invitations and table decor but she didn't buy the idea. Maybe I'll show up at the big ceremony dressed as Chewbacca.

 

You know me too well. But I couldn't do that to her even though she's used to our antics.

I tried to find the original drawing and scan it, but it's night time here so I'll scan it tomorrow. She's very good, and I'm not biased. ;-)
