Weve been getting a LOT of rain this week. This morning I got a call at 5:30am. Bob (my bf) was on his delivery route (he delivers newspapers) and was almost finished when he came up over a bridge and smacked right into a lake in the middle of the road! Freaked him out big time! He had to use all his muscle to shove the door open to get out and waded to the nearest house where the homeowner met him with a gun because he (the homeowner) thought Bob might be a burgler. After explaining what happened, the guy let Bob use his landline (no cell service at the time) and gave him some dry clothes and coffee. A sheriff who was called to the scene was nice enough to drop him off at a Burger King close to home so I went and picked him up. Now we're trying to figure out what to do with the car. The county wants to tow the car to storage tomorrow (Saturday), but that would cost us big bucks. Our insurance only covered liability, so no help there. AAA would make us wait til Monday at least (or until the water recedes) and they would only tow it to a service center where we would have to get another tow truck to take it to a junkyard. Other tow trucks want a couple hundred to get it out, but they would also wait til the water is down. Cant sue the county for having NO warning signs because "its an act of god" AGH! Only good thing so far is we were able to get a rental car, but his mom had to rent it with us as additional drivers because Bob doesnt have credit cards and my card only has a $200 limit and they needed to place a hold for the full amount (about $700) on the card *sigh* Man, what a day! When he first hit, the car was only a few yards from the bridge he'd crossed and only about in 2 ft of water. Bob wasnt able to back up because the car started to sputter and he turned it off before anything got too damaged (heh...). The photographer is actually on the bridge. The car drifted and the water rose even more throughout the day. Goodbye car :'( ( photo / image / picture from TheBip's Garden )
Have scenes like that in Iowa.County had many signs up.But thank God water is going down. Brother very lucky to get out.
Bip, that is awful! I take it the car is totalled? Will your insurance cover some/all of a replacement or the repairs? What a bummer! Has that river flooded in the past?
YIKES! I bet he was freaked out. And there should be signs there... at least now they ought to put some to warn others in the future. Sure hope you get another trusty vehicle without too much more hassle.
Car is definitely totaled. Today we went to tow the car up to the neighbors house, he was nice enough to let us put it in his drive. Bob used a tow strap and his cargo van to haul it up. The inside was totally covered in muck and we were mystified by how all the sticks and crap got in as none of the windows had been open Insurance wont cover anything, as all we had on it was vehicular accidents. We figured the car drifted about 50ft from where it started. Thank goodness it stayed (mostly) on the road! Only thing of any value that was ruined was my camera, at least it had been a cheap one. We are now driving a rental (Hyundai Elantra), pretty decent car. Weve got it for a month, gotta figure out how to pay for a new car. Heeeeyyy anyone wanna chip in to the Jens New Car fund?
Ouch, big surprise. :-( Will a junk-yard tow it for the title? Won't hurt to ask a couple of junk-yards. They say hello junk car , you say good-by car, no more money lost. Jerry
Jen, You have my deepest sympathy on your loss, even if it is a car. I really feel for you. Do you go to church? is there any help there (if you attend)? or even help from someone else's church. I know ours helps out where it can when someone sends an SOS via friends of the person/family in need. I wish I could send you a new one or at least a replacement one.
I am so sorry to hear about your misfortune. What a funny store to tell after you get over the shock in years to come.
Hey Bip I am so sorry about your misfortune! Keep an eye on Craigs List for a replacement. You may have some luck.
We actually bought a car today! The bf has a client who owns and sells cars, so he sold us a 2004 Chevy Cavalier (my old one was a '93 Chevy Cav!) for $3500. The bf and I will split the cost. And only .12% interest! So the rental will be going back on Friday. Shame, its a nice vehicle once you get used to it haha
Awesome news Jen! I bet that's a big relief for both of you. And now, you just have to make sure BF doesn't try turning this one into a submarine.
