I used some cinder blocks to make a narrow bed in my backyard. I know, it doesn't look great but we had them lying around so used them. Can I plant something in the holes in the blocks? What do you think will look good? Here's a picture of the bed taken this morning. ( photo / image / picture from Tina's Garden )
I have seen strawberries, zinnias, marigolds, alyssum, just and any kind of small plant planted in cinder blocks. Herbs too, Petunias, an assortment of succulents. Just about any plant that will work.
I've seen garlic planted in them too. I have a small stash of cinder blocks around here and have been thinking of using them for planting... if I could just find the right spot. Maybe next year... Oh yeah... your backyard ain't ugly any more!
Portulaca (moss rose)(annual, but self sew if good location) and sedums (perennial) if the blocks tend to dry out. There is a great hanging rosemary. If you can keep the blocks moist calibrachoa, and bacopa get really long and flowing from containers (are annuals and readily available at HD and garden centers) Calibrachoa ( photo / image / picture from Jewell's Garden ) Sutera cordata ( photo / image / picture from Jewell's Garden ). Feather sedum just getting started ( photo / image / picture from Jewell's Garden ) Another sedum hanging plant ( photo / image / picture from Jewell's Garden ) I am sure it will be beautiful with trailing plants and maybe some plants with height.
Tina, I agree with the other posters. I like the idea of plants that will hang down to obscure the cinder blocks. If dryness is an issue, you can always add those moisture crystals to the potting soil. Good luck, post pix when done please!
You can plant things in those blocks and achieve some very nice results. Take a look at the garden below our balcony. Oké, they are not cinder blocks like what you have, but they are blocks and look how nicely her planting has done. She has a combination of hangers and non-hangers. Good luck, Tina. Be sure to post your results.
We had some too last summer so we put them by the road with a free sign on them, they went fast...now I did see on Pinterest planting in blocks so I was thinking, I wish I would of kept them. I would think the only problem would be the heat,I would think you need something that likes the heat planted in them.
Beautiful Sjoerd! I love the different colors and textures: perfect balance between interesting contrasts without becoming a hodge-podge.
I have day lilies and large sedums planted in some cinder blocks. They do great and overflow the blocks freely. I sometimes have to move the babies to new spots. I have the bed outlined with rocks, and 4 cinder blocks on the corners--1 each corner. You can plant daylilies and sedums just about any place.
Remember a couple of years ago, a bunch of us created tipsy pots? Who's in favor of doing a "cinder block challenge" this year? Anything from one cinder block to an entire wall.
I planted a few strawberry vines in 3 of them today. Its not flowing yet - but I am hoping soon they will. I will surely post pictures soon.
