Totums I have been collecting garage sale stuff for a while now and think it's time to assemble these. It has been fun....They will go outside tomorrow. I don't usually do craftsy things but this is easy and fun and cheap.
They are cute. I started to collect glass for a totem but gave up on it.I played around with it but couldn't decide how it looked. My friend made one & I liked it.I was looking at them over at another garden site. sNs
Everytime I see someone post photos of their totems... I swear I'm gonna build one. One day I've got to gather up my glass and see what I can come up with. You did good Barb!
My totems have failed...Well my glue has. I used E6000. When you all told me about it I went out and bought a case of it. I never do anything moderately. Anyway, our heatwave is killing the one that I place in the back part of the property. It is in direct sun. Now I have the leaning Tower of Pizza... both have softened glue but the one in the sun has been reglued many times. I suppose that someone would tell me to get it out of the sun but that is not going to happen. Either way that glue is not really good for hot areas. We were looking in the book and realized there are many E6000 formulas.
I use Loctite Clear Silicone on my totems, they have been out in the Texas full sun heat, one for 2 years and the other for almost 5 years and they are both still standing straight and tall.
That is too bad the glue failed Waretrop. I hope you let the company know about that problem with their glue. I used it on my doorknob lamp, and it is fine, but indoors. Was the glue dry when you put them outdoors ? It smells bad for about a week after making something. I know most glues claim 24 hours to cure, but perhaps it needed more time? I have not seen Toni's glue anywhere, though I do see Loctite products around.
AAnightowl, Hi there... No the totems stayed in my hot tub room for about 5 days. It was normal temp at that time. Yes it doesn't have the most pleasant odor, that's why they were banished to the hot tub room. LOL AS I think about it today I think it's the texture of the glass and shape also. Maybe.. It seems to be the bottom and one in the middle. I will check it out in the next couple of days.
I can see why they were banished to your hot tub room! I do not have an extra room for banishing things, so my windows were open for several days in January... not all the way, but they were open. I hope you can solve the problem. Someone else on here recommended the e6000 glue to me, it works for my doorknob lamp. I was impatient with it, and should have taken a week and let each piece dry individually for 24 hrs before adding the next peice.
My poor totem. I told you it was melting. The other one is not doing this because it's very near shade all day. When I straighten this one out i will have to go in the shade when it's this hot.
I use e6000 all the time have not had any problem mine is out in direct sunlight and has been out in freezing temps maybe you got a bad tube sometimes that happens
donna in nc, I don't think it was the glue as I misplace one tube and used a second tube one time. I am thinking it's the configuration, texture or shape of the glass that I used. The first two times it was the same 2 pieces and I am not sure which part is releasing this time. I will go out soon and examine the good one and the melted one to see what's really going on.
About a month after making this birdbath, the top two clay pots unglued. I did them again making sure I had enough glue for a tight fit. I left it dry a few days. It has been outside for at least three months with no problems. Don
donm, Oh that's very nice. I want one of them too. It's so cute. Maybe I will work harder on my glue.
