Great to find what looks to be a really international forum - fascinating to see what people in different parts of the world are doing in their gardens now. I'm mostly a fruit and vegetable gardener on my allotment which means my house's garden is currently looking fairly neglected - any top tips on bindweed (Calystegia sepium) control out there? On my allotment, the beds are dug over regularly enough to keep it under some sort of control - but perennials in the garden make it much more difficult...
Welcome. Our members have good knowledge about growing fruits and veggies. So hang around and visit with us.
Welcome to a great forum! Sorry I can't help with the bindweed--here in Texas we either live with it or spend lots of time pulling it by hand.
Hi there allotmentor from West Lothian in Scotland. Welcome to GardenStew and I hope you'll make your stay with us a long one. Now about your bindweed problem. Here's a post I made a while back as I was having problems with this tenacious weed. "Thought I'd just give you all a few tips on how to deal with this 'dreaded weed.' Our neighbour has it growing in her garden and will NOT cut it back or dig it up. It creeps under the fence on my side so this is what I do. I push short lengths of garden cane into the soil next to the shoots and wrap the stems around the canes. This stops the bindweed from entwining itself around other plants. I then cut off the bottom of 2 ltr plastic water (or juice) bottles and remove the cap..." Continued here: http://www.happysimpleliving.com/2013/0 ... ur-garden/ I no longer have a problem so I hope you can get rid of yours as well.
Yes, this really is the most welcoming forum in the entire world! And no I am not at all exaggerating a bit (as I should know, because I've been banned from a few other forums actually)! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! But seriously, over here is where every member feels totally at home (if they are nature lovers that is). I myself personally find the exchange of information and gardening tips to be worth it's weight in gold! So on that note, let me also say welcome to the GardenStew - From the coastline of karachi, Pakistan!
Hi and welcome from a distant hotland. I think perseverance is the key to control these very stubborn weeds. I had been fighting nutgrass since day 1 when I started my mini-farm.
Hi Allotmentor and a hearty welcome to GardenStew! With regards to your bindweed question check out some of our other past topics on it: - Shall we speak of the unspeakable?... Bindweed - Does Vinegar kill bindweed? - Bindweed's a problem! It's true - we're quite an international community. It makes for very interesting and varied discussions! Glad to have you along.
Thanks to all for such a warm welcome and the tips on bindweed control both in this thread and in the links you provided - it's amazing how widely this weed is spread. Sounds like Glyphosate/Round-Up, applied only to this plant, near the end of the season is the answer. I'm normally organic (in fruit and veg. growing anyway) but I think I might make an exception for this in my back garden as it's driving me mad. Thanks again and looking forward to many more useful discussions.
Allotmentor sending you a big welcome from a Stewbie in Wisconsin,USA. Yes this is a great community from all over the world. I would try the vinegar or the Iron-X from Gardens alive on your bindweed. I to like to stay as natural as possible.
Hello and welcome to Garden Stew. The good thing about this forum is that there is always someone who has the answer to the question. I also hope you can share some of your knowledge with us too. I am sure you will enjoy it here
