My mom took this pic and asked me if I knew what this was. Its a tree. This is the only pic she has. ? ( photo / image / picture from TheBip's Garden )
I thought the leaves looked like walnut, but wasnt sure cause the fruit (nut?) looks different from the walnuts in our backyard. Guess we have a different kind. Thanks all!
Walnuts? WALNUTS?? I thought walnut shells were brown, and old looking, and sort of crunchy, and.....well, nothing like this. That right there is a fruit! ................ Isn't it?
This is what our walnuts look like, which is why I couldnt tell what the others were Ours are rough on the outside, instead of smooth with the lines. I dont like them cause the stupid things fall everywhere and are a walking hazard and they stink when handled Walnut tree ( photo / image / picture from TheBip's Garden )
Carolyn is right in saying that they're English walnuts. They grow wild here and the squirrels love them.
I love English walnuts. When I was little we had an English walnut tree in our yard. When they fell to the ground in the fall, my mom would put them in flat cardboard boxes to dry in the attic, and when the hulls were brown, we removed the hulls and found the lovely nuts inside. Yummy! The work turned our hands brown which did not come off for weeks, but we did not mind. I was thinking they were English walnuts too. Here in Missouri, we have black walnuts which are not as good, and are a royal pain to shell. [Anyone who wants my black walnuts can have them, they have a rancid flavor to me.] English walnuts are VERY high priced in the stores, don't let them go to waste.
The English walnut tree isnt in our yard. I know she took the pic somewhere in our city, not sure where though. We were only "blessed" with the Black Walnuts :/
Ah. Too bad, Bip. I only have black walnuts too, and hickory nuts. I love hickory nuts, but they are also a pain to shell. [and acorns, but they do not taste good at all.]
