The Kniphofia in our neighbour's garden. I was looking after their pots while they were away and these were too beautiful to ignore! You can see why one of their names is Red Hot Pokers can't you? They are really lovely plants and make a real statement in a garden.
Those are gorgeous. I had lots of them when in lived in New Mexico. I just can't get them to do well here. I have planted and replanted them... still can't seem to find a spot they will thrive in.
I have never seen these before until today but they look fantastic. I love the colours of them too. Very interesting, thanks for sharing the photos with us.
I started some from seed probably 10 years ago & they are still going strong. I moved one last summer to a different spot & it took the transplant ok. I wonder what is it about this plant that some people have luck with them & others don't? I just did a quick google search and they seem to be indigenous to areas that are marshy or damp. Maybe that is why they had trouble in TX, but it doesn't explain OR. (Or is OR dry?)
Cayuga... from the sites I've looked at, they say the plants like full sun and well drained soil. In New Mexico, they grew well in full sun with little watering in sandy soil. So I thought I'd try some with the same conditions here. I put two in full sun and where it didn't get watered alot and they just sat there, didn't grow, didn't flower, but didn't die. I moved one to a spot that gets sun until around 1 or 2pm, and regular watering. It's growing, but hasn't flowered. I put the other one in a spot that gets sun from around noon until dark (regular watering). It looks like it wants to die. I recently purchased 2 from the mark down rack (which means they weren't in the best condition). I put them where they got mostly sun with regular watering. They put out one bloom each and promptly died. I have 2 more planted where they get just a few hours of morning sun. They look nice and green. One bloomed a few weeks ago. The other just bloomed the other day, or should I say it "tried" to bloom. It never quite really formed before it died off. The plant looks healthy though. My first thought is that they aren't getting enough sun there since a neighboring plant has gotten much larger and is blocking out alot of it's sun. I guess I need to trim back that big plant a little. So, I've had the best luck so far with these NOT in full sun, but with morning sun only. I haven't given up on growing these... yet.
Cayuga.... maybe it has to do with the heat and not the actual sunshine? But then again... it's hot in New Mexico. Maybe it's the humidity? Maybe it's my soil? Maybe it's my water? Maybe it's ME??????
