I never saw anything like this before. We went to lunch today and ran across this weird looking tree. The Japanese maple has 2 distinctly different leaf color. Anybody know why it is like this? ( photo / image / picture from Tina's Garden )
Perhaps the new growth has reverted back to one of its ancestors. Who knows what species the tree was crossed with in its past history. Jerry
It could be a grafted tree. The green leaves could be produced by the root stock and the red leaves by the graft.
Green leaves could be growing out below graft (the existance of a scar should give that away). Or the lower branch get more sun.
This is quite weird looking but I like it. I love the pink colour of it. I agree with the above comments, grafted tree was also my first thought!
It is a grafted tree, but the owner of any such tree needs to make sure they prune off the root stock growth of any grafted plant. Otherwise the root stock will overtake the grafted portion shading out or over growing the desired plant. So if you have anything like this make sure you prune off the rootstock growth.
