My girlfriend and I are having a debate about whether this rug works in this space or not. Personally, I love it, but she doesn't. She thinks the colors of the rug don't work with the overall color scheme of the space. She either wants us to find an accent-wall color that can tie the rug together with the rest of the room or get right of the rug entirely. I am okay with the idea of painting an accent wall, however I don't think it's necessary and believe that the rug and the rest of the furniture can stand alone on their own. FYI, the black thing hanging in the corner is an Eichler fireplace. We love it and the round couch with pie-piece ottoman, so they're not going anywhere! Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! I think the rug looks great. Basically it grabs the attention and with an accent wall also it may be overdoing it. Just my personal opinion. Although not having a rug would make it easier to vacuum and you wouldn't have to worry about drink spillages.
Only thing I would do is move the sofa back a bit. With it sitting in the center you are not getting the full impact of the rugs color. Maybe that's why she thinks you need an accent wall.
Livelarge3, I find this rug very interesting. Could you get a better picture of it? First I would do things very slowly. Take a few days when trying something so you can evaluate it properly. I would move something so that the couch is setting more at the corner of the rug. Then the white chair more in another corner. Girlie friend should be told that nothing has to be permanent and that everything can be moved back to where it was. Keep an open mind. My hubby never liked what I suggested until I tried something for a few days. Then he didn't have to visualize it. Once you get over that, if it works, I would only use a tint of whatever color is in that rug maybe on one wall. That doesn't happen to be my bag but it may be yours. Now let's see that rug from above. I think I love it.
Back the rug up if you can. From the pictures it looks like the couch is sitting in the center of it, which is making the room look off. The reason the rug looks off in that room is that there are no other colors (that I can see anyway) that compliment the rug's color. An accent wall would be cool, and that would help tie the room together. But you could also just pick up the primary rug color with some other accent pieces, like couch pillows, a throw, an earthenware vase, picture on the wall, other knick-knacks that distribute the rug color throughout the whole room. Currently I see nothing in that room that has the rug color in it, which is making the rug stand out as this odd, unmatched thing, rather than doing what it's supposed to do, which is to (in this case anyway) which is to pull the room together and blend in.
Here is a better picture of the rug! Here is a close up of the rug, so you can get a better feel for its colors. I like your ideas in terms of moving it back to show off the rug more. I will try that. Also, the point about taking it slow is great. Small tweaks can happen slowly with minimal risk. Also, hanging a picture in the room with the teal from the rug is a good idea. I think Ronni has the right ideas for your room. I would do as she suggests and add touches of the colour you like best in the rug. Cushions, vases and the odd knick knack will look really good in your living room. Moving the couch to show more of the rug would be something I would definitely do too. Do show us what you decide on once your happy with the space won't you?
The rug definitely adds color to the room and you could even paint an accent wall as well. Add colorful pillows to add more accent colors! You might like adding wall decor as well! Good luck on this discussion with your girlfriend. Moderator's note: removed website link, see point 1.1 of community rules
Rearrange the sofa because it is covering up the rug. To add more style to the room, you can also paint the accent wall.
