Donna, it is a little late for shipping successfully now. PM me next spring and we'll see what you might like.

I am looking for some ideas too. I will probably plant a hydrangea in one large pot. And in the barrel, I am planning to put in a clematis. But I have very bad luck growing in containers, so don't have very high hopes.
Tina, I have better luck with adding a small amount of those water retaining crystals. Just make sure it's a s-m-a-l-l amount. One year I was a little heavy handed, and my container soil shook like jello! Also make sure you have drainage holes in the bottom.
My whole garden is in pots and reading this thread has inspired me. Thanks everyone. And Jewel big thanks to you... I've been wanting more periniels, was wondering what to get, your pics helped!
Some great container gardening here, given me loads of ideas. I brightened up a dull corner of my garden with some hostas in pots. I have always had problems with slugs but since sticking the copper tape around them they have stayed looking crisp and fresh. Herewith a photo, since it was taken they have produced lovely cream and pale lilac flowers. NB: Please excuse the weeds, was taken before I tidied up Hostas ( photo / image / picture from Gardengirl's Garden )
What a fun topic here Stewbies! Love seeing all the beauties! I have Hostas and Heucheras in containers cause I am so addicted to them that I run out of room in the ground. I also keep Lemon Balm contained (although it always seems to jump ship and reseed in the ground ) I have a Dwarf Alberta Spruce that has happily grown in a container for 5 or 6 yrs. Here are some of the past and present containers. I like to put little perennials and small shrubs in pots for the first season, then plant them in the garden in the fall.
Cayuga- I guess the answer is basically Yes. I hunt the greenhouses for deals on my favorite, or new varieties of Hosta and Heucheras in small sizes. They will be much less expensive. Then I can nurture them a bit while the roots grow in a container. I also get freebies at the end of the season from our wholesale nursery. As for shrubs, I do buy small ones, but also get orphans as a by product of my landscaping job. They may need just a bit of my TLC before going into my landscape.
What a lovely selection of containers Kay. Talking of heucheras, they are also one of my favourites. I am always on the lookout for a new variety. I managed to get three in this container and am pleased with the result. Heuchera ( photo / image / picture from Gardengirl's Garden )
