The photos were given to me by a 92 year old relative that could not identify anybody. The first photo is of a logging camp. Some of the men are my relatives but I don't know which ones. Dangerous job..... that guys got his arm in a sling. What's the boy holding is it a jug of something??? Maybe that's how the man injured his arm ?
Two interesting pictures,..its a pity you are unable to pinpoint any of your kin,..the date on the second picture is 1898,..wow 115 years ago,..i was unable to see the name clearly. The boy has a Jug,..could be a drop of the hard stuff lol,..or just water for adding to the sharpening stone,..though the man in the middle also has a jug,..looks like a big crew for a logging camp.
Love the pictures. I have been researching my family tree and my husbands. I followed my husbands way back, mine on the other hand I followed to West Virginia and Mass around 1890s.
Love these photos!! I, too, am researching my family tree and finding something like this is like striking gold! Pity your relative didn't know who was in the photos. Maybe you can piece it together with other family members and their photos?
Awesome photos! Because of one of my aunts on my dad's side of the family... we have a treasure of old photos and information. She's actually traced us back to the late 1700s in Italy... WITHOUT a computer. Now on my mom's side of the family... we get stuck around the late 1800s in Louisiana. anyhow... love to see these photographic treasures!

I love old photos! I was curious what the couple of guys were doing in that first picture...off the the right hand side of the shot, they're sitting opposite each other....are they playing cards?
jbest, Yes I have always noticed that. And they usually look pretty stiff too. The men in the first photo look like they are working hard at "lounging around". The folks in the second photo are standing in the more common formal non-smiling way. Old photos are indeed interesting.
I was told by a photographer friend of mine that the reason for the very solemn expression in those very old photos is that it took so long for that antiquated equipment to actually capture the image that people tended to be uncomfortable trying to hold a smile for that long. Also they were required to be absolutely and completely still so that the photo wasn't blurred. Combining those two things, it's no wonder the subjects all look stiff and uncomfortable....they probably were!
