Last weekend was our Fall Fair. It is an annual event that runs for 3 days in mid September. When we first moved here, I didn't realize what a huge 'deal' it was for the town and thought it rather strange that school was closed on opening day. I have since come to embrace all the fall fair traditions. The night before the fair opens, all the exhibits are entered at that night the judges pick the winners. On opening day, all the children meet at the town hall. They are to dress in school colors and they march in a parade down the main street. There are 3 schools. This year the trophy went to the 'red' team. ( photo / image / picture from Netty's Garden ) Then the fair is officially opened and the fun begins. There are livestock shows ( photo / image / picture from Netty's Garden ) A rabbitry is always very popular with the kids. They offer petting and have bunnies for sale. Here is my youngest with one ( photo / image / picture from Netty's Garden ) There is a flower and vegetable show, as well as crafts, agriculture, quilting, photos, pies, preserves and everything else you can imagine there would be at a fair. This is the adults flower section ( photo / image / picture from Netty's Garden ) Down at the end you can see the winner for 'biggest pumpkin. The winner weighed in a 682 pounds! ( photo / image / picture from Netty's Garden ) I really liked this prize winning Celosia ... I must grow some next year! Quite a few entries, but my daughter won enough to also win 'most points in class'. ( photo / image / picture from Netty's Garden ) There is also poultry, rabbit and quinea pigs at the show. I was quite taken by this rooster, who was a first prize winner ( photo / image / picture from Netty's Garden ) There was also a farm equipment showcase ( photo / image / picture from Netty's Garden ) Can't forget about the midway! ( photo / image / picture from Netty's Garden ) The feature event on Saturday nights is the Demolition Derby. The first judging is for best dressed car. The winner was the crowd favorite, car #87 the 'Duck Dynasty' car ( photo / image / picture from Netty's Garden ) Here it is on the way into its derby ( photo / image / picture from Netty's Garden ) Half way through ( photo / image / picture from Netty's Garden ) And getting towed out ( photo / image / picture from Netty's Garden ) A scary moment when a truck in the next derby came over the barricade towards us! A baby show, spelling bee, vendors, petting zoo, games, singing contests, tractor pulls, antique car show, fair ambassador contest, and much more. We spent 2 days there and won some ribbons and some cash ( photo / image / picture from Netty's Garden ) And when it was all over, we slept WELL!
CONGRATS to youngest on winning all those ribbons. She's got a really good gardening teacher too. Looks like a very fun 3 days. Local fall fairs are so much fun, much more so than the humongous State Fair we have down here.
Love that last photo. Congrats on the wins. Our county fair will be next month. I haven't been in ages. When we kids though... it was so much fun and so exciting. Looked forward to it just as much as Christmas. :-D
Hi Netty,..a good time was held by all,..and your youngest looks very happy with all her ribbons,..of course you are proud of her,..good for you. Great description of all the events and the pictures really showed the excitement,..oh i bet you all did sleep well after the events.
I love your photographs as they brought back memories of the fairs we used to have here. Sadly the tradition has died here now as more and more commuters are moving into the village. Your daughter did so well winning all those ribbons neither wonder she looks so delighted. Does she display them all in her bedroom as my kids used to do? Thanks for sharing your fair with us.
We have an annual fair also but nowhere near this scale. They are really fun! Sorry to hear that the tradition is dying out where you are Eils. Looked like lots of fun Netty. Congrats to your youngest! The demolition derby would have interested me greatly.

A funnel cake is made by pouring batter through a funnel into a deep fryer. When it comes out, it is sprinkled with powdered sugar and other toppings are added. Funnel cake before the toppings are added. This one has a lot of sugar! ( photo / image / picture from Netty's Garden ) I like them with vanilla ice cream and caramel, or apples, cinnamon and ice cream. The really aren't very good for you, but I only have them once a year at the fair. One funnel cake is usually shared by my 3 kids and I...they are very filling!
