I'm doing a project for engineering and I need to know if people have back pain caused by gardening. so feel free to respond and let me know if you have any solutions
I do not have back problems. I do not dig with a spade, I do what is called "min tilling". I find that this taxes the back much less. I have also used a tool called an "automatic shovel". These two things I do so that I will not develop back problems. It is an old saying, but where back probs are concerned...prevention (or avoidance) really is better than treatment.
Here is a vid showing how the thing works. http://youtu.be/uZiziSP23BY Min tilling is a method of loosening the soil instead of actually turning it over (a movement that actually totally disrupts the layers of micro-organisms that naturally occur in the soil. CAYUGA--Here is a link to a page on my website where you can read about min-tilling: http://www.volkstuindersvereniginghoorn ... age18.html
Sjoerd, I've used that method for years in my flower beds (veggie beds are so big that I just have my husband rototill them, which certainly saves MY back!). I never knew what that method was called, but you have enlightened me, as always. I agree--prevention is the best way to avoid a sore back.
Yes, I too have had a lot of back pain when working in the garden - But then again, when I work, I do so like there is no tomorrow, (so how can I not be in a little pain afterwards)... But at the end of the day, rewards outweigh the pain every time! So that right there is my solution, the sense and vision of how everything will look in the end. Therefore that's what keeps me going. As they say: Workin' in the field till you get your back burned - Workin' 'neath the wheels till you get your facts learned... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TF1jH6Cv0tk
Hey Sjoerd! I like the look of that auto spade. Very cool. I wonder if I could get one on this side of the Atlantic. I have heard about the minimum till method, but it seems so...improbable. But since I now have a herniated disc, I might just challenge myself to try it.
We are trying to design some type of chair or stool that can alleviate back pain. Do you think that it would be a good/realistic thing to design?
Hi E.S. Maybe. There are a lot of those chairs on the market now though. I use a lumbar roll (a cylindrical pillow). Works wonders and is very portable. Cheap too.
I have back pain from gardening. But dh says need to pace myself. But with no rain to speak of. Think weeds would slow down-NO. I stretch like DH when into karate. When I buy new recliner-will be leather. And will try it out for Lumbar support.
yes back pain when I garden but then I have constnt back pain so it is worth it when Gods beauty burst forward
