Donna--tell me about the placement of this cold frame. Is it to be left permanently where it is shown in the foto's?

I notice that there are gaps between the bottoms of the walls of the cold frame and the ground.
I am inquiring because I wonder if you are planning to close the gaps so that mice, rats or shrews cannot easily get into your cold frame. Also some folks also drive planks or metal strips into the ground around the border so that burrowing rodents cannot enter the cold frame sub-terrestrially.

Sjoerd, I just knew you would see the cap I told my hubby we need to fix them and Sjoerd will agree. Not sure of placement yet. Watching the sun for a few days to make sure I place it right. Then I will take care of caps and put decon in there for critters. Temps are playing games right now. 92* today 116* in greenhouse so just waiting it out.

 

I have never used a cold frame, so all advice is welcomed.

Can you put winter sowed plants in them???? Collected some seeds I want to try. We have lot of left over lumber. From other projects

 

I meant to add that the wooden pieces on the sides to keep the top open are clever. It was also clever to use the plastic corrugated piece instead of glass. It is lighter and will not break. I'll bet that you get a lot of use out of that thing. I used mine for a number of years until I got a small greenhouse.

 

That's a good cold frame,..i like how you used the wooden props to hold the cover up,..i bet you are looking forward to seeing something growing in there.

Droopy - The inspector thinks its his playpen. He tormented a mole in there yesterday.

Koszta kid - I'm going to try beets, spinach, lettuce and swiss chard. Some winter sown seeds might not work as it would be to warm. I am mostly trying to keep things from freezing and taking up space in my greenhouse.

Sjoerd & Philip - The props are great as they are adjustable at several heights. And when open I use tarp traps to keep the wind from lifting it.

 

Very smart---you are more than just another pretty face. hahaha....Right!

Philip was right--I'll bet that you cannot wait to get that thing planted.

 

Sjoerd - Already started planting some things in pots. Its just to hot day time to put in cold frame. My lettuce already bolted on me.
