Well, I guess I'm really slow, but I just discovered I can add my location to a map featuring all you other Stewies! Have you looked at it recently? Man, we are EVERYWHERE!!! Literally all over the world! If you zoom in, you can click on each location and the member's name pops up! I found Waretrop and Jerry Sullivan, Palustris, Eileen, Sjoerd, Droopy, calinromania....it was fascinating!

    The map's here: http://www.gardenstew.com/about2076.html

And did you know you can add your birthday to the Calendar section? So I added mine, and then just for fun I added Halloween and Christmas Day too. :stew2: I discovered that if you click on the event in the calendar, you can see whatever message is attached to the event. I got a little goofy with what I added. I imagine there are all kinds of seasonal things other members could add who aren't in the U.S. I'd LOVE to see the kinds of events you celebrate!

And The Stew is even on facebook!! Who knew? :sete_003:

I knew about the map and the birthdays/anniversaries. I have not used them.

Ronni isn't it nice to find something you can have a little play with? :-D When the map and calendar were first introduced I used to check them out every day to see if anyone new had been added. Now there are so many that it's hard to tell them apart but it still fascinates me to see how GardenStew has grown since their introduction.

Yeah... the map really puts our global community in perspective. It's even been used in cases of disaster to see if we had any members in harms way.
I haven't checked out the calendar.

Ronni, Now if you go back to the map. Click on "waretrop's" pin and keep clicking on 'closer'. Click on satelite. Keep clicking till you are at the closes. See my house and greenhouse? See my back Veggie garden and all my front garden? Now drag it around and look hard in the grass area. See me standing there waving at you?????

But unfortunately, the map also makes me realize that we still don't have any members from the entire South American continent - Nor from the huge landmass of Russia and China. Even no members yet from Japan, Korea, and very few from South East Asia...

These are all incredibly diverse and very fertile horticultural areas of the world. Yet we don't even have any members from Central or Northern Africa (and just a handful from the Middle East, who don't even post regularly)... However if we had members from all these regions - Then a seed exchange over here would have been truly phenomenal (as well as the exchange of plant knowledge)!

I guess it's the language barrier which is keeping them from joining The GardenStew. In my case, English here in Pakistan is actually a second language (not taught as a foreign language). Even on TV, we grew up watching regular sitcoms from US and UK, as well as many other programs (including the dreaded Jerry Springer Show, and now even the Jersey Shore)... :D So I guess this is why I have no difficulty communicating with everyone over here.

But not every region of the world had British colonial rule for almost 200 years. Thus English language never becoming popular there... So in many areas, people I guess really have to make an effort if they wish to communicate at an international level. We of course take it for granted, but for others it's really not so easy at all...

So I only hope that someday something like Google Translate will evolve into a sold tool which will aid other gardeners to join our wonderful forum. Otherwise I think that we are seriously missing out on a lot because of this language barrier - But on second thought, so are they...

By the way, our GardenStew is also on Google+ :

I tried, I really did! I SO wanted to see all that detail. But the map on The Stew isn't interactive like when you call up your own address on Google Maps. So I could only get the arial view, from far enough away that I couldn't make out all the details you're talking about.

I did notice that you live in a somewhat secluded area....not a typical subdivision with houses next to each other. The homes are much further apart with lots of land and trees and green in between. Must be nice!

Seriously though Waretrop, I don't know. :( I just went to my dot on the map, to see if it was something where each Member could do it for themselves, but not for anyone else. I can't do it for me, either. :(

    Um..........Frank? Any input?

Hi Ronni, I have a tip. If you navigate to your desired location on our member map, zoom up close and then click the Google logo on the bottom left of the map you will be brought to the actual Google Maps site where you will have all the functionality.

I didn't know that we could zoom into Stewbies yards! I must warn you ... my pin on the map does NOT zoom into MY yard!
