A recent photo of the plant is the only way we can give you the proper help. But it sounds to me like the flower is reaching the end of it's bloom life. The Marigold flower doesn't live forever, it grows, blooms and dies to be replaced by others on the plant. Sometimes there will be a salt build up on the soil surface, using filtered bottled water instead of tap water will take care of that. Marigolds require 6 or more hours of sunlight everyday or they will not grow properly. You mention that the middle part looks "leg"....does that mean it is getting long and maybe doesn't have very many leaves on the stem? If so, then that means it is not getting enough sunlight and is growing long and leggy trying to reach more sun.
Your plant is doing great, the bloom is just dying as it is supposed to do. When the petals are dead, remove it from the stem so the plant can put it's energy into making more blooms. As long as Marigolds get a LOT of sunshine and warmth, additional water if rain is scarce and no extra fertilizer they will continue to grow larger and bloom more for the season.
