Our next-door longhorn, Reba, had her calf last week. Here is the happy mama and her baby: Reba and her calf ( photo / image / picture from marlingardener's Garden ) I have no idea of it's a bull calf or little heifer--just know it's as cute as the Dickens! Later: My husband tells me the calf is a bull calf, and he ought to know . . . .
Good neighbors! Do you know if Reba is purebred? She appears to be well taken care of, esp. well-fed.. Hank
Yes, Reba is purebred, Hank (and bless you for knowing the difference between purebred and thoroughbred!). Longhorns are "show cattle" or "front yard cattle" around here. Farmers and ranchers have a few just for show, and often have them out in front of their houses, grazing and impressing passersby.
Wow. Impressive, Jane. I am amazed that the farmers/ranchers there have pasture ornaments. I am speechless.
I know nothing about those little animals but they are impressive and beautiful. I wouldn't mind if they lived next to be at all.
Can you keep us updated MG? Would love to hear about the new arrival's adventures, and of course what you are going to name it!
It's so nice to see newborn animals isn't it Jane? The calf looks fit and healthy and is obviously bonding well with Reba. I wouldn't like to be anyone wishing him harm though as Reba's horns could do serious damage.
When I first saw the calf last week, he took one step forward and two sideways. His directional ability has improved greatly--now he goes straight for mama. I was feeding the chickens early this morning and saw him having breakfast (lots and lots of milk). I'll try to keep you updated, but it depends on Reba. She may not take kindly to having her baby photographed constantly! Believe me, I don't want to argue with Reba . . . .
What an adorable little family. Good thing those horns grow in later There is a small herd of them on a ranch just north of Fort Worth. They also have a few Buffalo and a couple of Lama's. Almost all Texas State Parks are homes to small herds of Longhorns too.
Longhorn are very impressive,..those horns are huge,..she is a beautiful animal and a cute looking calf.
