With the rains, our native flowers and plants have gotten their second wind and are blossoming for us and the bees. Early November flowers ( photo / image / picture from marlingardener's Garden ) This is half of our backyard bed which has a Wafer Ash tree, bamboo grass (really a grass, not the invasive bamboo), both white and purple lantanas, rue, white and cherry salvias greggii, Artemisia Silver Queen, and Mealy Blue and Mealy White sages. The Cedar Sage only blooms in the spring, but it's in there somewhere!
Wowie Jane! That is a lovely spot. I'm glad you mentioned the Rue... I forgot to start some this year.
How I'd love to be there with you at the moment Jane. I'm already forgetting what bees sound like let alone remember the scent of flowers. Instead we have the smell of cordite every night from fireworks and what sounds are like gunfire.
Eileen, we awoke to the sound of gunfire this morning--hunters after doves. Why someone wants to shoot a bird that will give them at most one bite of meat is beyond me. We just feed our doves, and let them seek sanctuary here on Red Gate where hunting by humans is not allowed!
Your November garden in beautiful. Right now all I see here is dead leaves. Going to start mulching them next week.
Pretty as a picture, MG! Boy, I enjoyed looking at that. I think that it is particularly commendable that you are growing a bed full of natives. Chapeau.
Ah, Philip, looks can be deceiving! Our flower beds get a little ( ) weedy, but the first priority is the vegetable and herb beds, and we take care of the flowers when we can. I did get a few nice bouquets of roses and natives to take to the local nursing home. Some folks there don't get flowers and cards, and the activity director is kind enough to let me know when someone's birthday is coming up. The home provides a birthday party once a month for all the birthday people, and I provide flowers if I can. Some of the bouquets are somewhat "original" since I just cut what's available and hope for the best!
Hi Jane,..top marks to you for taking bouquets of roses and natives to the nursing home on birthdays,..and again for the monthly birthday party. People who don't even get cards must be overjoyed to be given flowers,..its nice to see your blooms being appreciated.
Philip, when I first started taking flowers for birthdays, the activities director just gave me names of the ladies. I asked about men having birthdays, and she said they wouldn't like to get flowers. Some of the nicest hugs I've received were from guys holding a bouquet!
Oh what a sight for already winter-sore eyes. *sigh* Your nursing home friends are sooo lucky to have you around. I would really appreciate an m-g-made bouquet since I'm certain it has more personality than a store-bought one.
Hi Jane,..most people would not consider giving flowers to a man though when in a nursing home and not getting a card or similar,..flowers would mean something entirely different.
