Its been quite some time since Ive seen a woodpecker around here, I was thrilled! It landed on the window jamb, then a short flutter onto the shepherd's hook. Stayed long enough for me to get these 2 pics, then flew off. Lovely to see! That mound of snow you see under the birdie is the top of the bird feeder haha I also have 2 suet feeders on the opposite hook I think its a female Downy ( photo / image / picture from TheBip's Garden ) ( photo / image / picture from TheBip's Garden )
Aren't they fun to have in the garden!!!! Yep, that's a female Downy Woodpecker, we have a couple of females and at least three males, I love watching them at the suet block.
It was nice of it to pose for you while you took your photographs wasn't it? We have a pair of Great Spotted Woodpeckers that visit daily and I, too, love to see them at the feeders.
Good bird! I like woodpeckers a lot, and frequently see them at mother's and around the stables. They haven't visited our house for years.
I always feel sorry for the birds when it's so cold. Happy to hear that at least they get to eat well.
I just don't see how their little legs don't fall off in this weather. They duck one in under themselves and then the other. Poor things. But God made them to tolerate that cold and ice and wind.
You know Barb, I was wondering the same thing, about how they handle the cold. So I googled it and heres what I found- http://mag.audubon.org/articles/birds/h ... old-winter Pretty interesting. A few years ago, we have a pair of Downys nest near our backyard, but I hadnt seen them since then. Glad to have em back
