Yep, new growth all right. YEAH!. What you've been seeing with it, the spotting and yellowing, is what I meant earlier about it not being an easy plant. It looks to me like all the damaged leaves are the older ones. That would be typical, the leaves don't last a long time. Why don't you go ahead and cut off those older ones -- it should spur some new growth.
Yep, that's new growth all right. YEA! All that discoloration is one of the reasons I said earlier that they're difficult plants. They look to be the older leaves that aren't looking so good - why don't you go ahead and cut them off, that should help to encourage new growth also.
Thanks for the props you guys! Way to make an old gal feel good! OK, so I had actually pulled that plant out originally from where it sits with its neighbors by a window, because I was trying to decide whether or not it was dead, and if not I was thinking I might repot it. It's still in its original pot from the grocery store. But now that it has this new growth, what do I do? Should I go ahead and re-pot it anyway? It seems like an awfully small pot for such a lot of leaves. A couple of roots are snaking out the bottom holes, and the soil dries out very quickly so I feel like it's mostly roots in there crammed in to a tiny pot. Anyway, what should I do? It's a little bit concerning to me that the new growth is on either side of the plant on the very outside of it, right against the rim of the pot. Will I damage something repotting it now? Should I wait till those shoots are a bit bigger?
Sounds like it's outgrown or outgrowing that pot. I'd go ahead and repot it. Just be as gentle as you can.
Thanks, Cheryl. I'll go get some new potting soil this weekend. I just realized that I'm all out. Oh, and hey, that reminds me…..any recommendations for a potting soil? That last bag I got, though it was a name brand, I didn't like it. It was sort of dry feeling, rather than the moist stuff I had the time before. Any of you have any faves you'd like to share?
You can't really tell from the picture, but my Calathea is doing SO well. It must really like being at Paige's house! It's put out a couple more new leaves, and seems to be flourishing. I'm SO glad, especially after its rocky start when I wasn't sure it was going to make it! Oh, and that little chunk out of it? Charlie, the great dane, decided it was a snack! Luckily I stopped him before he did any more damage!
