Our asparagus bed took a beating last year with the drought. We did what we could to help it, and our work (fertilizer, deep weeding, and mulch, mulch, mulch!) paid off.
I cut a very nice batch of fresh asparagus today, which we will have with roast chicken tonight. We dearly love fresh asparagus!
If you have room, plant some crowns and enjoy asparagus that is so much better than the store-bought.

I haven't been to the back garden yet. It is still full of snow. If I can get into it, when I go to the chickens, I have to go look at my asparagus. It just may be melted over there.

    Thanks for reminding me..

Oh yum, Jane! we are a couple months behind you. Maybe I will put some inside a high tunnel. Maybe I will put everything inside a high tunnel after this year. Things inside there are already starting to grow...outside? not so much of anything going on. I'll have to take a peek at yours.

FBG, I always steam our asparagus, add a little butter, lemon juice and sea salt.
Please tell me how you grill your asparagus!

Oh grilled. Yes, that is my way too.

I can't even get my door open in my back garden for the snow is stopping it. My asparagus is not snowing their heads, at all.

well, in the mean time I will drool over FBG's veggies.

Toss asparagus in melted, clarified butter. Sprinkle with the Mrs. Dash variety of your choice. Grill in basket over hot coals (I prefer wood coals) or hot fire until asparagus are just turning limp.

Eat your share before returning to kitchen, and say that what it missing fell in the fire. Eat your share again.

There is nothing like homegrown asparagus! I have some in the garden that we eat raw - we all like it better that way. It also grows wild up and down our rural roads, so it is usually a race to harvest it before someone else does.

I have a patch of purple that we eat mostly raw. YUM! it is an excellent refresher when you are hot and sweaty/thirsty out in the garden. No need to come back in the house to get a drink.

Oh my, I was grilling chicken tonight, and decided to try grilling asparagus. Good heavens, what have we been missing!
FBG, that is fabulous! Instead of the Mrs. Dash, I used a mix of our own dried herbs, lightly applied, and that was without doubt the best asparagus we have ever eaten!
Thank you for opening a wonderful gastronomic experience for us! (You will notice all of the exclamation points in this post--which is an indication of how much we enjoyed our grilled asparagus. :) )

Wern't (made up hillbilly word) my idea. I just expanded upon Miss Barb's statement a wee bit. But thanks.

Oh the things one learns on Garden Stew. I thought I was the only one who munched on raw asparagus!

Much better than steamed, huh? Glad you had the opportunity to have some grilled.
