My name is mike, I am an avid gardener, chicken, duck and turkey farmer. We plant about 2,200 SQ FT of garden or more each year. We primarily grow organic and build much of our fences and bird coops from recycled materials. I recently built a 12 X 7 greenhouse for about $150 that's real nice. I will make a thread showing what I did that may inspire others. I looked at other gardening forums and thought this would be a nice place to put down roots.
Welcome to the Stew! This is the friendliest and most helpful gardening place around. We have two large and one small veggie gardens, chickens (don't you love those silly birds?) and a small farm that we love.
Thank you. I have a busy day ahead. I need to make a small portable chicken pen for some 6 week old chickens we hatched in our incubator. I need to take down a big maple tree that's broken and sick, it also shades my woman's garden. Once that tree is down I can build a turkey coop and pen get the turkeys out of my big garden. Then build a bigger chicken coop to handle 30 chickens to roost and lay eggs. Then when all that is dont I can start planting in my big garden. After summer when the gardens were dieing down we turn loose the chickens ducks and turkeys to clean up and fertilize. The soil is about as rick and weed free as you can get. I have a youtube video of my new greenhouse. Im very proud of it for as fast as I made it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKBz4334SJ0
Hi Mike and a hearty welcome to GardenStew! We have a few chicken keepers here already so you are in good company. Looking forward to hearing about all their silly adventures
Like always I have more to do then I can get done. Right now I'm wishing I had somebody that's younger then I to climb a tree and start getting the big branches down. Too old and fat to be climbing trees, the smart move is to keep myself on the ground. I dont feel like a broken neck would be very fun. LOL
Mike welcome to our forums from Scotland. I've just had a look at your greenhouse where everything looks strong and healthy and so tidy!! The chicks seem to be quite happy in there too. It sounds as though you're going to be rather busy but I hope you'll find time to show us some pictures of your gardens, your dog and all your feathered charges.
Hi Mike, welcome from a very distant hot and humid land all year round!!! I like the name of the place where you are from "Walla Walla". 8)
Hi and welcome from SE Texas. Can't wait to see all the things you grow... including those feathered friends. :-D
Here is the greenhouse, the benches were made with uniform sized pallets. There is good storage space underneath and also a spot for brooding chickens. The heat lamps help heat the greenhouse. We have a small heater. I will upgrade it with water, heat, lighting by next winter. My wife and I are blessed beyond belief. me in the garden ( photo / image / picture from mike townsend's Garden )
