First of all, please excuse my perpetual laziness, (as I should have posted this over a month ago). But due to one reason or another - I just never had the time to retrieve all these pictures from my camera. Anyways... This year the annual Horticultural Society of Pakistan's Flower Show took place on 27th February 2014. However, exactly who will be the Chief Guest wasn't announced until the invitation cards were delivered! HSP invitation card ( photo / image / picture from S-H's Garden ) Yes, believe it or not - This year the Chief Guest was Honorable Mr. Mamnoon Hussain, President of the Islamic of Pakistan! Why? Because before he became the President of my country, before he served as Governor of Sindh Province, even before he headed the Karachi Chamber of Commerce & Industry - He was a member of the HSP (Horticultural Society of Pakistan). Thus a diehard Horticulturist himself! Yeah, who knew??? HSP invitation card (inside) ( photo / image / picture from S-H's Garden ) But unfortunately due to some other pressing matter, President Mamnoon Hussain couldn't make it... However he did send his good wishes (as well as a deep regret that he couldn't be there himself). Anyway, the event soon started - And Mr. A. K. Khan (founder of the HSP) was also there. Today at the age of over 94+, he is still very much involved in the daily activities of the HSP, and is also the lifetime head of the society! In the early 1990s he also received the President's Pride of Performance Civil Award, and is the author of many books as well! It is fair to say that had it not been for Mr. A. K. Khan, than we wouldn't have any horticultural society in the country today - As he single handedly has build everything from the ground up! Today there are millions of plant and tree lovers in Pakistan - With many different societies, like the Ladies Horticultural Club of Pakistan, Pakistan Bonsai Society, Cactus & Succulent Society of Pakistan, Orchid Society of Pakistan, Floral Art Society, Ikebana Society of Pakistan, as well as many more societies in many cities of Pakistan (including a few about Kitchen Gardening too). However, it all started with Mr. A. K. Khan in 1948! http://www.hsp48.org/history.html Mr. A. K. Khan ( photo / image / picture from S-H's Garden ) And so there was the usual prize distribution. Students winning HSP first prize in their category ( photo / image / picture from S-H's Garden ) Kids winning prizes in their category too ( photo / image / picture from S-H's Garden ) However one of the happy occasions was that the Ladies Horticultural Club also turned 50 years old! members of the Ladies Horticulture Club ( photo / image / picture from S-H's Garden ) Anyway, this was the opening ceremony. You guys absorb this for now, and I will upload more pictures of the whole display of plants soon! For more information, feel free to visit the HSP's home page: http://www.hsp48.org/index.html And this here is the Ladies Horticultural Club page: http://www.lhckarachi.com/ And this here is my video of the 2011 Flower Show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CI0yR40uLT8
I can just imagine the high respect people have for Mr. A. K. Khan. It would be truly a magical thing to get to your later years and know that you have the love of so many people Thanks for the history lesson and continued education S-H.
Yes Frank, Mr. A. K. Khan is very well respected in the entire country, (turns out that even the President of my country is a followers of Mr. Khan's teachings)! I myself have known Mr. A. K. Khan as an acquaintance since 2001, and have a few of his autographed books as well! Take this one for example, titled "The Gardener" [first edition published in 1994, ISBN# 969-8197-00-1]. It is the only 500 page book that is suited for our climate and growing seasons. It is full of illustrations and propagation techniques of every type of plant and tree that grows in Pakistan. Really an unbelievably useful thing to have! The Gardener (front cover) ( photo / image / picture from S-H's Garden ) The Gardener (back cover) ( photo / image / picture from S-H's Garden ) The Gardener (autographed to me by the author) ( photo / image / picture from S-H's Garden ) If anyone is interested in buying the new and revised edition of this book online, then here is the link: http://global.oup.com/academic/product/ ... k&lang=en& And if anyone wants to know a bit more about Mr. A. K. Khan himself - Then see this link: http://www.dawn.com/news/648210/flashba ... reen-shade You guys absorb this for now, as I have to head out somewhere - When I return, I will add all the pictures from the 2014 Flower Show.

Nice food! Lots of furniture. You're going to show us flowers and plants soon, right? It surprised me that the show was conducted in English. How do Northern Pakistanis know English so well? Just wondering. It's great that you have Mr. Khan's book as a reference. There isn't much written for English speaking Hong Kong gardeners, but there are one or two, which I have very much appreciated. They're both written by Arthur van Langenberg. Recently, I was at the Hong Kong Flower Show and I found a lady selling her series of books which catalog all the plants that have been found growing in Hong Kong gardens. It's mostly in Chinese, but there is enough English to figure out what the plant is and how to grow it, etc. It's an excellent plant resource book. Nice to see all your pictures!
Well if you liked that, then you'll also like this - Video of the 2011 Flower Show. Link to YouTube: Same video on my Vimeo page: And the show, plus just about everything else over here is often in English, (think of it as part of the legacy the British left behind after almost 200 years of colonial rule)... Besides, this is Karachi, the Southern most cosmopolitan mega city of Pakistan, with a population of over 20 million, (not Northern Pakistan)... So the use and spread of English over here is almost as if it was a native language. And of course there is also the fact that all Pakistanis are generally very badly addicted to Hollywood movies and TV shows...
