It could depend on the type of grass you have and what you're soil is like. When a friend of mine moved, her backyard was pretty much sand and clay, so she had a lot of work to do to get a beautiful yard.
Cut it a little bit longer, rather than cutting it short. Make sure you have a good cultivar of lawn for the area it is in (shade-tolerant, etc) in the first place.
