( photo / image / picture from firedup4jesus20's Garden ) ( photo / image / picture from firedup4jesus20's Garden ) Hello everyone! I am having a lot of trouble with my squash and pumpkin plants. I am not sure what is wrong with them. I do have red spider mites, but I don't think they are causing this problem. I have tried a pepper, onion, and garlic spray and a baking soda and water spray. I didn't notice it helping though. Thanks for your help! P.S. I would love any advice you have for dealing with red spider mites too. ( photo / image / picture from firedup4jesus20's Garden )
Really it looks like sun scald to me. Give them a little shade to harden them off before you put them in the garden.
Sure could be if they are in a window. Do you have any dog or cat flea shampoo? If not just go to the Dollar store and buy a bottle of Sergeants. The green stuff. Put about an ounce in a spray bottle, add water and spray your plants well. Underside of leaves too. That should take care of spider mites. You can spray this as you need it. Just do it in the shade and let sit till dry if its very hot where you are. If you are organic go with the cat flea and tick spray with pyrethrin,,non organic use the green stuff. Both are safe. Same amounts for both.
Okay thanks Mart and Caroline! I really have trouble hardening off my plants because I use sun lamps.
Unless its really cold in your area,, you might want to stop using the heat lamps. Start putting the plants outside for an hour or so daily in the shade. Then increase the time a little every few days to get them adjusted to the garden temps.
Well I can do that now, but when I first plant them it is really cold outside. I think with a little more patience I will do better next year though. Thanks, Rachel
With squash its just as easy to plant seeds directly in the ground. They can take cool as long as it doesn't frost. If frost threatens,,just cut the bottom out of a milk jug and cover them at night. Remove in the morning.
