I went out this morning and "dibbled" (word Eileen taught me) around our potato plants, and came up with a respectable harvest of small new red potatoes. Tonight we will have ham, steamed potatoes with butter, and leaf-lettuce salad. I can hardly wait. New potatoes fresh from the garden makes the wait worthwhile!
Oh, yum. I hope you had a lovely dinner. It sounded delicious! I am only dreaming of putting in potatoes. It is so ridiculous for weather up here right now. Hopefully next week, but rain is in the forecast for quite a while.
We had steak, onions, mushrooms and our own new potatoes for or evening meal last night. Funny isn't it that the potatoes we grow always taste so much better than those we buy from the shops We've just planted another six varieties so we'll have plenty of choice later in the year.
Aarrrrrrgh! Oh, I'm so jealous! New potato's. I shall think of you and your fresh, new spuds tonight for supper. What kind are they, BTW? Chapeau.
Sjoerd, our potatoes are Red LaSodas. It is about the best kind of potato to grow here. So far we haven't had problems with nematodes or Colorado potato bugs. Bunkie, I thought ours would never "pop up" since we had a much colder spring than normal. But when they did, they really came on quickly! I'm sure yours are just waiting to spring up and make great little potatoes.
I did some more dibbling (love that word!) today and this is what I came up with: Bowl of new potatoes ( photo / image / picture from marlingardener's Garden ) I'll make some Italian potato salad tomorrow with the small ones, and we'll have the larger ones for dinner soon. I love harvesting what we've grown!
I can't believe you are eating fresh potatoes. Do you get enough until fall to store them? I am canning french fries....
Wow! Those look great! Yep a bit of envy, I must admit. I hope to try potatoes in the near future too.
Barb, LaSodas aren't a good storing potato, so we eat what we can and give the rest away. Beeker, they are fun to grow, and if you can rotate the growing area so you don't replant in the same place for three years, there are very little insect/disease problems. Besides, either dibbling or digging, it's like a big treasure hunt!
