The Lewis County Master Gardener's had their annual plant sale this weekend. I made sure I got there shortly after they opened this year, and wasn't disappointed. Two good sized noid blue hostas for only $3 each. They are potted or in the ground. I got four pots for $2 each of smaller varieties of hostas, two of hi ho silver (couldn't resist the name), one each of bountiful and bitsy gold. Then I browsed the perennials and got a replacement for my fall aster that didn't like last winter, two physostegia and a helenium. Of course I had to come home and look up on the internet what the last two would look like in flower. I stayed in my budget of $20...to the penny. Now I am grubby, sun drenched with dirt between my nails and happy as a clam in the mud. 3 new perennials ( photo / image / picture from Jewell's Garden ) Bitsy gold hosta ( photo / image / picture from Jewell's Garden ) Praying hands, hi ho silver, bountiful hostas ( photo / image / picture from Jewell's Garden ) Noid hosta ( photo / image / picture from Jewell's Garden ) 2nd noid blue hosta ( photo / image / picture from Jewell's Garden ) Now the master gardener plant sale in town had plants marked up 3 and 4 times as much in smaller pots. Guess it just depends on where you shop. I did get some nice 5 and 8 gallon plastic pots for free there so it was worth the stop..
Excuse me while I try to control my envy . Those were wonderful purchases, and I can't believe you got all those plants for only $20! Hearty congratulations!
Great plants for a great price! I don't have any of your new Hosta's except for 'Praying Hands'. I really like the 'Hi Ho Silver!
That was a good day, Jewell. You managed to get some nice plants there. Congrats. Good that you got some large plastic pots....the price was right!
Am I green with envy? See for yourself All those healthy and gorgeous plants for only $20. I would have needed to have my hands tied together at that sale 'cause I would have spent way too much. Then you go and tell us you got those large pots for FREE It just isn't fair!! Seriously though you did really well keeping to your budget but managing to find so much. :-D
What a great sale!! Those prices are incredible. I like your hostas, particularly the noid blues. I like how you have put them in containers. What a great idea. I think I will try that. It might keep them safe from foraging deer. Enjoy your new plants. I bet I know where you will be this time of year next year! At the Lewis Cty MG sale right?
Sorry Eileen, stratsmom and Marlingardener that I couldn't take you all along You would have had a great time, but would need to purchase a container to get it all home. The sale was in a bigger building this year with the spaces under the tables packed too. Hubby said I should go back today, but .... Budgets are budgets aren't they? Cayuga Morning, I use pots to protect from slugs, but it might work for deer too. You never know. One neighborhood here the deer come right up to you I can't imagine trying to garden. People in that neighborhood just have grass and native plants in their beds. Eileen and Sjoerd, the pot price was excellent and I showed restraint and only took 5. Netty, I was surprised to see the labels on the hostas. Someone had gone to a lot of trouble with great descriptions. I had never seen these dwarf hostas in any of the garden centers so I feel very lucky to to get overflow of someone's plantings. Thanks Cherylad.
Awesome, Im jealous I also went to a plant sale yesterday, though most of them were $5-$7 I did get a Variegated Solomon's Seal which Im happy about for $6. If thyed been cheaper I definitely would have bought more :/
We have a Master Gardener's sale every year in my neck of the woods, but the prices are normally a little high. I like going because there are so many plants that I usually don't get to see.
Bip and EG, it is amazing the differences in prices. The Lewis county vs. the Thurston county master garden plant sales was huge here. The selection in both was great. EG I too get excited about being able to get plants not normally seen in the big box or even the local nurseries. But any plant sale is always fun to check out.
