I don't know much of anything about herb gardening, but a friend of mine shared this with me, and I thought it was fascinating. It certainly appeals to my anal/OCD side. Those are pots that have been dug into the ground so that only the tops of them are at ground level. Apparently this keeps the herb garden tidy (I can see why) makes cultivation easier, and stops the spread of one into the other. ( photo / image / picture from Ronni's Garden )

That looks very pretty but I don't do uncluttered, in the house or in the garden Is that Rosemary as the border? My Rosemary plants have grown to be 3-5 feet across, wonder what those will do. Growing Herbs is no different than growing any other annual or perennial, except you get to cook with the trimmings or nibble on them as you walk around the garden.
It is pretty, and probably the only way to keep mint from taking over! I couldn't do it, no way to stick in an herb that followed me home, but I do admire someone who can (and who has the self-discipline to restrain the planting urge.) Toni, when we were in Williamsburg one of the herb gardens was edged in rosemary. I asked the docent how they kept rosemary so tidy and small. They replaced it every three years! Not for me--I get attached to my plants, especially herbs and roses.
I really like that look Ronni but, sorry to say, not something I'd do in my garden. I have to scramble about to even find some of my herbs among my other plants. I would love to be more tidy but my garden has told me no we like living this way.
That's an interesting way to plant the garden. I wonder if there are other benefits to partially burying the containers like that.
omg this is such a great idea!! man if my parents would let me I'd totally do this in their front yard just to make it more appealing in itself!!
It appeals to me too, but it is so not me. I would stop & admire it, maybe take a picture, but then go home and enjoy my plants that scramble, interweave & self sow.
I like it! It's a great idea for dual purpose of growing herbs not just for food, but also for aesthetics. Herbs are such pretty plants. I've been planning on starting an herb garden for looks as well as harvest. Maybe this will be the way to go for me. Thank you for sharing!
I like it too. However, it would clash with the rest of my yard which is nowhere near so neat and tidy. I am silly enough to want my whole yard so neat and tidy, with no weeds, and no grass blades or flowers out of place. My yard is way too huge for me to accomplish it though. I have at least 35 or more flower beds, and that does NOT count my veggie garden and tubs/containers! My kids do not help with yard work, it is only me to do it all. [Of course, I had them do it when they were growing up. Now that they are adults, they have no interest in yard work.] At least I do not have to worry about DS mowing my flowers or breaking my lawn mower.
