We had a useless trash compactor in the kitchen. It had been installed so that every time I walked by it, I caught my ankle on the food lever. Ghastly appliance, outdated and ugly!
My dear husband took it out, and built a book shelf in the space. He matched the cabinetry color and put in adjustable shelves. Now my overflow of cookbooks has a home; my ankles are safe; and the shelves look so much better than that Darth Vader thingy in the kitchen!

Mucho better! I didn't realize people still used trash compactors until I was at my aunt's recently. I was like.... "where's your trash can?" :D

I love the new look!! The shelves look right at home in your kitchen. Now you'll know exactly where to lay your hands on all those cook books.

I love the idea. He did a wonderful job, it looks like it was always there.

I would love to do something similar to replace our dishwasher (but leave the electrical, etc for resale purposes...for the next generation). With just the two of us it is more work to load and unload it than to just do the dishes.

Wonderful idea. It looks great. I have extra cabinets in the dead space over my fridge and freezer. It's full of cookbooks. Reminds me of what you have done here.

I had picked up so many good recipes from the web (and so very many from this site) that I had to have two ring binders--one for main dishes, and one for other recipes. Now I have them handy, and use at least one cookbook a day.
I have an Italian bread cookbook that is one of my very favorites, and it gets used so much that some pages stick together, and the spine is coming loose. Fortunately, I can fix the spine, but the sticky pages I'll just have to live with!
I dearly love having my cookbooks handy, and not crammed into a too-small shelving space.
