my sister gave me 2 lilac bushes have never had lilacs need any and all info on them do they get tall? Do they bush out alot? she had no idea what kind they are and hers didnt do too well so she didnt have any info so help please
They can get quite large, so choose your spot well. There is one outside my kitchen window, and while it smells great inside when its in bloom, it also blocks the view out the entire window!
The can get tall, and as far as I know you can't cut them back. My mother has two that are taller than me now!
Lilacs are easy to grow and easy to transplant. They tend to sucker readily and the bush will gradually get larger & larger in circumference unless you keep cutting them back. I agree with others, choose a spot where they can have space to grow. Every other spring you will need to cut out the dead wood. Enjoy your lilacs! To me there is nothing like their odor in the spring! Their blossoms make wonderful bouquets for your table!
They are wonderful bushes, but are always sending out suckers. My cousin was thinning them out and gave me a few. They don't bloom right away. You might have green bushes for at least the first 5 years. Don't get discouraged.
