I'd like someone to let me know if this looks like poison ivy. Has the hairy stems, with the 3 leaf cluster. But I thought the ivy leaves had a little more unevenness to them. And one leaf has been chewed by an insect it seems. Do insects eat poison ivy? Thanks. Poison Ivy? ( photo / image / picture from Stacy001's Garden )
I don't think those are poison ivy, but do be careful until you find out for sure. Poison Ivy does not have hairy stems.
I second Netty, but be careful anyway. Poison Ivy is tricky and can change its general appearance; glossy or matte, smooth edged leaves or rough edged leaves, etc., but I have never seen it with hairy stems either. Can you see the color of the roots? If it is red, it is poison ivy.
This is my Poison Ivy. I keep it as a reminder.... My larger leaf is sort of hard to tell but that small one to the left of the big one is a sure thing that it's Poison Ivy. Kudzu doesn't live in my neck of the woods. It actually has a little "nutch" in the leaf.
People are agreeing on the legume family, you had better be careful. Since you are in Alabama, you might want to mow it down. One of your Alabama neighbors mentioned Kudzu, and that is quite common in your area. Pull it out and see what you've got. I'm beginning to lean towards Kudzu, too.
Thanks everyone. I didn't even think about Kudzu. I guess the only time I've seen that it's been in a huge thick kudzu-filled area and not a single vine like that...but yes, that's how it starts! I'll try to get another photo of the base of this. It's growing from the base of a large oak tree that's bordered by azaleas. The vine grew very quickly and is about 7 ft long. It's in a commonly-mowed area but we went out of town for a week and came home to it...and 5 days later still haven't mowed due to weather.
