The virus has gotten into them all. I just finished rouging out the last of them. I've been rouging out and burning infected plants for the last few years, but, with all the infected rhizomes being imported, and producers claiming that we have to learn to live with it, I'm giving up. I refuse to grow infected, mis-shapen plant/blooms. It appears, to me anyway, that the virus is even transmitted through to the seed. The seedlings appear clean, but they have never grown to bloom without exhibiting either Yellow Streak, or Mosaic virus.

From now on, I concentrate on growing vegetables.

I have never heard of this FBG. I have had the same canna bulbs for the past 20 years. What happens to Canna's?

I had not heard about the virus, I just checked all of mine and they look beautiful. I have had them for close to 15 years and haven't bought any new ones since then...they multiply like crazy so I hadn't even thought of buying more.

    Sorry to hear about yours.

Netty, this link has good photos and descriptions of what happens to them. http://www.canna-collection.org.uk/canna-virus.html

Great link Toni, I had no idea that Canna's were another plant disappearing because of disease. The same thing happened here with Impatiens. It is very rare to even SEE Impatiens for sale here anymore.

I checked out the impatiens problem last year and since I can not provide moist shade for anything, my Impatiens haven't been affected by that.

I know what you mean, mate---I have given up on them as well. They simply will not grow here where I live.

Ach, there are other plants that will though.

    Good luck with your veg.

We get virused plants here but we know what to look for and avoid like the plague.

Usually buy from homebase/B&Q, also reputable suppliers.

I have not had a virus when I did grow them.

I bought four dwarf cannas from the mark down rack earlier this year. Two in full sun are not looking very well... two with some shade look okay.
I wonder if they have this virus? I'll try to remember to take photos this evening.
My regular orange one's that I got from one of my aunts years ago is showing no signs of disease... and neither are the wild one's I dug up from the river bed.

From what I have read about the problem, it's just been in the past few years that the growers have been shipping out diseased rhizomes. The ones in gardens for years or found in the wild shouldn't have a problem.

Also that article mentioned something about not buying the bags of rhizomes, maybe the ones already growing in pots at the nursery are safe.

Some Canas leaf can be marked and not virus, telling one from a healthy and a marked is difficult.

My Cana Lillies have white markings, which Canas are we discussing?

    Canass Indica etc?

This is my canaa, see the white markings?

Its acutally all pink. No idea when it was planted, the first image popped up in a different pot.

Kate... those are Callas. We were discussing Cannas.
    Easy mistake. (Beautiful flower though!)

Two different plants, Cannas are not lilies but are sometimes called that, what you have is a Calla Lily.
Click on the blue link to see the Canna X generalis (Canna )

I have some of the Calla Lilies with spotted leaves too and that is their normal coloring. That is a beautiful color by the way.

Yes thanks both, I realise now you tell me.

I must have bought them last year and they seemed to die and have popped up.

I do tend to move plants around the garden like I move furniture... :D :D

I really should have clarified that I have given up on breeding canna. The virus' are vectored by sucking/chewing insects, and as we all know, canna are a favorite of virtually any bug that does the above. So, any people local to me, that grew store bought rhizomes, very likely grew diseased plants. Japanese Beetle's, aphids, leaf rollers, etc. I have had to fight them all.

The virus got into all my stock, I'm not about to start over again. Even discounting mistakes made, I'd be 5-7 years behind where I was, and I'm too lazy to start all over again.

Here are the dwarf canna's I mentioned earlier. They are in full sun in a decent sized container. I try to keep them evenly moist, but not soaked. I thought maybe the problem was too much sun, so I've just been cutting off the burnt looking leaves here and there.
Could it be this disease you're talking about?

Sorry about your set-back FBG. It must be disappointing to put so much work in just to have bugs and virus take it all away.
