I picked two of my cantaloupes on Thursday and it took all my strength to restrain from cutting them open on the spot! :D I did let them sit for a day so they would be a little sweeter.

I'm probably next to get picked ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden )

For supports, I used some old hanging wire baskets. Since I only had a few of those, I needed a few more supports. So I decided to use an old "bath scrubby". I didn't think the material would be strong enough to hold a full size ripe melon, but so far so good.
Last week I noticed the melon on the ground was starting to split. So I picked it. It was on the verge of ripeness. Yesterday, I noticed another starting to split. So I picked it and have it just sitting for a couple of days to see if that will help. If not, most of it will be tossed out as well.
After picking the two ripe ones, there's still 11 on the vine!
Now if the darn armadillo would stop digging around in there, they may have a chance to ripen too!

Chapeau! The pics are really inspiring. Tja, I can almost smell that cantaloupe that you cut open.
Tis a great success story and especially enjoyable to see on here.

That rack worked out well, didn't it.

Have you been giving them lots of water to make them split so?

    Anyway--great work, miss.

    Thanks Sjoerd and Henry.
Yes, we had a very rainy week not long ago. I figured that's what caused the splitting.

It is the reason for the splitting. I had two that did the same. If they separated from the vine on their own they will continue to ripen for a few days. I have on sitting on the deck now.
