My daughter got this plant 6 or 7 years ago......and I'm having a senior moment and can't remember the name of it, dangit!! Anyway, back when she got it, it was tall and had flowers, and looked a lot different. After a while the flowers died off, leaving just the stalks with leaves. At some point, the cat got to it and ate all the leaves and in the process bent the stalks, and it looked like it was a goner. But Paige didn't have the heart to throw it out....she's like me, if there's ANY chance there's life left, she just can't do it. Anyway, she kept it, and surprisingly it started to put out new leaves and stalks. It grew a bit, but then the dog (the one before Charlie the great dane, little poodle/spaniel mix) jumped up on the table where it was and knocked it over, de-potting it completely and breaking all the stalks. Paige almost threw it away again, but decided to see if it might just come back. Sure enough, it did. I won't bore you by recounting the litany of accidents that's happened to that plant. It's been knocked over, pulled out of its pot by the roots, eaten by Charlie, got left in a dark cupboard for two weeks right after they moved because it got forgotten, had leaves pulled off of it, juice poured into it....you name it that plant has suffered it! Amazingly, it's still growing. For some reason in the midst of all that it stopped growing up, and now it just sort of spreads and cascades. It just simply WILL NOT DIE!!!! Ok, but that's not the end of the story! Apparently not only will it not die, but it looks like it's setting out to ensure its survival into perpetuity by ..... propagating, I guess is what it's doing. Look what I found in the mother in law plant that sits right next to it! Take a closer look! Somehow, and I have NO IDEA how it happened, a shoot? seed? tendril? who knows what? has insinuated itself into the soil of the mother in law, and is now happily growing there! Have you ever??!!
Plants are amazing aren't they? That will be a nice combination pot with the two plants. It is hard to find good pot mates and the plants did it for you
Yes! Kalanchoe, that's it!! Thanks Cheryl. And yeah, it sure is determined all right! I told Paige we are NEVER getting rid of this thing! I mean, seriously, it SO deserves every bit of life we can gift it with after it's struggled so hard through so much, just to stay alive!
I can see that it is a kalanchoe (wouldn't have guessed it though), but I was thinking swedish ivy, but that wasn't quite right looking either. I guess with all the struggling it has to do, I can see why it is so "houseplant" looking. Good job rescuing it...again.
I have one of those too. I have no idea how to take care of it. I just took a clipping from my grandmother's plant to save it for (from) her and put it in a shallow dish of water to let it root. It must have been in that dish for about a year now, drying out every so often. I guess I should pot it. It is definitely a hardy plant. The "mother" plant was upright and had flowers. It looked like a potted shrub. My little clipping looks like the pictures here. It is acting more like a vine than a shrub.
I must be the one one that is good at killing indoor plants. Mind you I have huge flower beds outdoors and I tend to them daily in the summer months but indoor plants just seem to be forgotten until I think, oh yeah I forgot to water the plants this week... My last killing was an aloe plant, I think I might of over watered that one... almost forgot, great story about the plant....it deserves to live after going through all of that...
